C. M. YEAGER. THE "IRONCLAD" PASSING The death of Andrew Jackson Sharp of Franklin, the other day called attention again to the rapid progress being made by the world. Mr.

Sharp, who was 89 years of age, claimed the distinction of being the only survivor of the steamship Merrimac, the first iron-clad vessel ever used in warfare. The Merrimac, with its iron sides, terrorized the Union Navy for several months until it was met by the Monitor, another iron-clad vessel, and definitely stopped. The Merrimac, with its steel-clad sides and upper deck, and the Monitor with its revolving iron-clad turret, together, revolutionized warfare. Out of them have evolved the giant dreadnaughts which ply the oceans today. AU of this development has taken place within the memory of Mr.

Sharp, who participated in the first battle between the new types of war vessels. But the most striking aspect of the situation is that even the dreadnaughts are being regarded today by some experts as out of date. They are said to be unequal to coping with submarines, airplanes and smaller and faster craft now available for sea battle. Dallas Times. Petroleum Used by Ancients Petroleum products were well known to the ancients, according to the youngest son of Lord Lempill, a Scottish laird.

Speaking before the Royal Aeronautical Society, Lempill said: "We read in the Bible the account of the building of the Tower of Babel, and learn that 'Slime had they for The slime was bitumen." He further mentioned that Pliny and other ancient writers have referred to the use of "Sicilian oil" for illuminating purposes. The Dead Sea, originally named the Lacus Asphalites, provided bitumen, which was sold to the Egyptians for embalming purposes. In the East the petroleum industry was a growing concern long before the Christian era. Earlier than this the Chinese and Japanese had sunk oil wells and ventilated the shafts by means of bellows. In Japanese history it is related that "burning water" was found in the reign of Tenjitenno, or about 1200 years ago.

About the year 1600 ft Japanese named Magara found oU which he subsequently disttuea. The product was sold as an 11-luminant. It is thought this was the first instance of an attempt to spilt up the crude oil into its component parts. The Duroose of the study is to ae- termlne the source, nature and development of various parasites with the hope of being able to cope with them more efflectively. Although Southern California is considered a particularly advantageous locality for such a study, owing to the cosmopolitan nature of its population, no extended research of this kind ever before has been undertaken here.

SPECIAL SUBJECT Under the direction of Prot Gordon H. Ball, the department is now giving its attention to a flagellated type of parasite known to science as chilomastix, an organism that infects the intestines and about which comparatively little has been dis covered. This parasite is perhops responsible, tnr n. vnrip.t.v of human ail ments, especially disturbances of the digestive tract, ana may d. uhu producing.

Knowledge of the life hiatnrw nf p.hiinmfistix will be of un questioned value to the medical profession, wnicn now is uouu to combat it with comparatively little information as to its history or Its effects on the human system. At present Dr. Ball is devoting his research to investigation of the transition ot chilomastix from the motile to the cyst stage and has had the parasite under observation for several months. His discoveries with regard to it have enabled him to discard some theories with relation to this development and It is hoped the department will be able to conclude the research with much positive data concerning chilomastix. TO ENLARGE WORK Other forms of parasites that are peculiar to the human system will be studied as the work proceeds.

Especial faculties for this work are expected to be installed at the new campus in Westwood, not only for this phase of the study but for Investigation Into plant and animal parasites as well. "Heavy immigration into this locality from oriental and Central American countries of which a large proportion of the inhabitants are afflicted with parasites, makes Los Angeles an important center, for a study of this kind," said Dr. Ball in discussing the work.
