and Mrs. C. M. McGulre. One of the cominsr social events of THE ITb next week, which Is looked forward to with great pleasure by the teacti-ers and patrons of this city and Glen-dora, is the annual reception tendered to them by the W.C.T.U organizations of the two cities.

The wedding was a very quiet affair, none but the relatives and intimate friends being present. Immediately following the ceremony the bridal couple left for the beaches where they will spend a few weeks before returning to this city, where they will make their home. Tuesday evening the many young friends of Misa Dorothy Tuthill and Miss Catherine Scoville tendered these young ladiea a party In the basement of the First Congregational Church. The affair was in the nature oj a surprise party as the young ladies are leaving for Claremont, where they will enter the college. The evening was pleasantly passed playing various amusing games, music, etc.

Refreshments were served late In the evening and the hostesses departed wishing their honored guests a most successful college course. Mrs. Galo Hines left Monday for Charlesvolx, where she will Join h.er husband, who ia in the' drug business. Mrs. Hines has been' visiting her parents, Mr.

and Mrs, A. W. Bates, for the past few months and as she prefers California to the eastern States she will endeavor to persuade her husband to take up their residence here after the winter months. Mr. and Mrs.

E. B. Collier and daughter motored to Newport Beach Tuesday, where they have rented a cottage. Mrs. Collier and daughter will remain for a few weeks for the benefit of the latter's health Vhile Mr.

Collier will return in a few days. About forty members and friends of the Congregational Church motored to Coldwater Canyon Friday evening and enjoyed a moonlight picnic at this resort. The large tables were covered with an abundance of good things to eat and marshmallows and weiners were roasted over a large bonfire. The evening was most en-joyably spent In singing many of the old songs, playing games of all kinds, while many enjoyed the plunge. Mr.

and Mrs. Perle Glass and children are returning home from a month's auto trip which took them as far north as Oregon. On their way home they stopped close to Lassen Peak and enjoyed seeing the famous old crater during one of its eruptions. Mr. and Mrs.

WITH the first early days of fall comes the gentle call of sweet charity, and In the name of the gentle-vlsaged visitor many elaborate functions are being planned for the busy days and weeks ahead. The social calendar is replete with events that will savor of the call, and with the opening: of clubdom, which Is prophesied to be one of the busiest seasons in the history, of local organizations, the socially and charitably inclined are to have a -busy time. Quite the greatest frolic of the month, and one which proved the banner oc- caslon for attendance, was the char- 'V ity benefit planned and cnrrled out by -the Woodmen of the World on the High School grounds on Friday night and last night With charity the keynote of the entertainment, which was ot Its kind the most successful ever given In the city, and the annual Christmas dinner of the organization the motif for the affair, many actors and artistes of note attended and gave their talents to the notable success of the event. Among those well known in the theatrical and social world attending and contributing to the affair were: Miss Jessica Dixon. Miss Bessie Chapin, Miss Juanita Vigare, Misses Sylvia and Olivia Castillo, Miss Marion Fletcher, Miss Corlnno lesser.

Miss BUlle Rhodes, nnd Messrs. Ros-coe Arbuckle, Charles Murray, Fred Mace, Bob Albright, William Gibbs, Lee Moran, Eddie Lyons, Max Ashor. William Franey and Milburn Moran. Hundreds of guests from near-by cities were present during the carnival hours of both evenings, and last night the fun waxed fast and furious until a late hour. The grounds were aglow with lights an the scene was one of the most brilliant of the year.

Fraternal organizations have been having merry times recently, as was attested by the gay party in the Masonic Temple on last Tuesday evening, when a double surprise was participated in by a gny coterie of the members of the Eastern Star. Planning to purprlse, Mrs. George Ebert, AVorthy Matron of the organization, and one of the best beloved members in the local chapter, on the occasion of her birthday, a delightful affair resulted. Coincident with the birthday of Mrs. Ebert the wedding anniversary of Mr.

nnd Mrs. J. N. Hall was also celebrated, also proving a surprise to the feted members of the chapter. A programme of rare excellence was presented.

Miss Florence McDonald, Miss Ruth Hamilton, Wilbur Wheeler nnd Miss Veva Langley all contributing vpry largely to the pleasure of the occasion. Later supper was announced nnd, escorted by a gay throng, Mrs. Ebert was" drawn into the banquet hall In a beautiful chariot hidden with a profusion of pink carnations and greens. Miss Borthick and her father expect to make a visit of several weeks in that city with relatives and will also visit the exposition grounds while there. Mrs. C. O. Pulliam of North Kenwood street left Saturday morning for Bishop, where she will remain for a week.

Mr. Pulliam's mother, who has Just returned to her son's home! has been in the northern part of the State for some time. Mrs. Pulliam's visit included a trip to the exposition, where she enjoyed a vacation of two weeks. Miss Ruth Music, who has returned from the exposition at San Francisco, is very enthusiastic over the wonder.8 of the fair.

Miss Music also attended the celebration given by the Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West while there. Mrs. J. C. Sherer of Somerset Farm was a most charming hostess at an elaborate dinner given at her homo Wednesday evening'.

The guests of honor were -Mrs. J. Whltaker and her daughter. Miss Ina Whltaker, and Mr. and Mrs.

R. B. Whltaker of Ninth street. Mrs. J.

L. Whltaker and her daughter have very recently returned to their home after a visit of three years in England. After an extensive trip through the Middle Western States and Ohio in particular, Miss Elizabeth Smith has returned to her home at No. 771 South Brand boulevard. Mr.

and Mrs. H. A. Wilson, who have bften spending a few days In Riverside, have returned to their home at No. 325 South Louise street.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilson made the trip by automobile and both report a delightful time. Miss Clara Pearson, who, until very recently, resided on South Maryland avenue, has left for Brawley, where she expects to spend the winter with her parents. Miss Pearson will be missed greatly by her numerous friends as she Is a social favorite.

Miss Pearson has been the guest of honor at a number of farewell parties and dances. Mrs. Myron Smith of Bakers-field arrived in Glendale Tuesday afternoon at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Royall E.

Wheeler of No. 1546 Patterson avenue. Mrs. Smith will make her visit about two or three weeks long before returning. A quiet home wedding, held in the presence of a number of relatives and friends, was quite an event of social Interest to the many friends of Mrs.

Martha Blanche Coughran and Mr. Charles W. 'Aageson, who were married Friday evening at the home of the bride, No. 1660 Ruth street. The Rev.

C. R. Norton of Glendale officiated. Miss Ludy Spfar of Glendale was mald-of-honor, and Mr. Ariel Hoegee of Sierra Madrewas the best man.

The couple were married with the beautiful ring ceremony. The bride carried an elaborate bouquet of carnations. The room was handsomely decorated with bamboo tree and ferns and carnations. Mr. and Mrs.

Aageson went for a short honeymoon to Long Beach and are now at home to their friends at No. 1660 Ruth street. Mrs. T. M.

Vogel took advantage of her brief absence from home, by obtaining entrance to the house, preparing a fine dinner, and then awaiting her return to give her a surprise party.
