Bowman, assistant general salesmanager. The Crescent Company is a distributing unit handling General Petroli'iun products in the Los Angeles Harbor area.

It was established in the early davs of the auto- motive industry by F. W. Barnes. He now retires trom active work the oil business and his son, Lynn Barnes, takes over the reins district manager in Long bcacn tor General. Mr.

Barnes was a pioneer in this field and first began distributing, in Long Beach with a team of mules a'tnclicd to a tank cart. In those early days he sold only a few hundred gallons weekly to grocers and occasional garages widely separated. When he sold his business he was operating a large fleet of trucks with a dally delivery that ran into thousands of gallons to scoret ot retail outlets. Prize Slogan Put to Work Enforcement of the law la now under way following the State-wide educational campaign of the Call-fomia Committee on Public 8afety on the subject of driving caution at intersections. The slogan and subject for January, chosen from those submitted in the recent prize contest is: "Where Highways Meet, Be Di creet." Motorists are urged to beware of the danger that lurks at all street and highway intersections, and to obey the right-of-way law.

Traffic officers throughout the State are paying particular attention to speed and right-of-way violators at intersections during the remainder of this month. Fisher bodies, 112-inch wheelbase. Cross-flow type radiator. Roller bearing rear axle with trussed housing-. The 1931 Oakland eight and Pontiac six lines reveal style, performance and comfort new to these two General Motors cars, in the show exhibit by Reeve Gartzmann, local Oakland-Pontiac dealers. These cars, despite body, engine and chassis refinements, are offered this year at base prices below the minimum prices of past years.

In the Pontiac six, the longer wheelbase of 112 inches has permitted designing of bodies which create an impression of low-swung length. Included in the list of external advancements on the new Fisher bodies are the chrome-plated screen which conceals and protects the radiator core, curved tie bar supporting the head lamps, longer hoods, and one-piece full crown fenders with indicator lamps. The new Oaklands and Pontiacs Cylinder Coupe Royale Sedan, a 1931 Model Exhibit 3k Pontiac 1931 Six both have an Important factor eliminating noise and increasing riding comfort the extensive use of rubber cushioning throughout the chassis. Larger brakes, providing more certain control and greater safety, are found on both cars. The Oakland eight for 1931 has a new type of synchro-mesh transmission with quiet shift permitting acceleration up to forty or forty-five miles per hour, rubber spring shackle bushings, an ingenious combination of intake silencer and air cleaner, new electro-plated pistons and heavier big-tooth axle gears, and other improvements providing a full measure of performance and comfort.

Five wire wheels are included in the standard equipment of both the Oakland and Pontiac lines: with de luxe equipment of six wire wheels available at extra cost. An exhibition show chassis and twelve cars comprises the exhibit. In the Pontiac line, with standard equipment, will be shown the coupe, two-door sedan, four-door sedan and custom sedan; and with deluxe equipment, the coupe and custom sedan. The Oakland will show, with standard equipment, the coupe two-door sedan, four-door sedan, and custom sedan, and the sport coupe and custom sedan with de luxe equipment. USUALLY IT'S DIFFERENT Motorists should know that wheel lubrication usually is separate and distinct from the rest of the chassis oiling system.

This is likely to be overlooked, especially in so far as the grease cups which are used to supply lubricant to so many rear wheel bearings. With higher wheel bearing loads the order of the day, lubrication becomes still more at Show Massachusetts Sets Record A new high in motor vehicle accidents and deaths was created in Massachusetts for the fiscal year ending November 30, last. The dead numbered 794, against 777 for the previous year, it is stated. Up to October 1 there, was a small decrease in fatalities, but that month went thirteen ahead of the figure for the previous year and in November ninety-seven were killed in traffic crashes. rv vv a January 35.

Air-stream bodies, all models with silent second. Nine Reo Royale and Reo Flying Cloud models on display at the auto rthow are expected to draw attention from automotive engineers as well as show visitors, because of their new exclusive aerodynamic I radiator, hood and body lines, Is the opinion of HeTbert E. Woodward, president of Herbert Woodward, distributors of Reo motor cars In this section. Since the Los Angeles automobile show is the second appearance of the new line in an automobile exposition, where its lines can be closely compared with those of the other makes, Reo officials, as well as other members of the automotive Industry, will watch with interest the reception of Reo's two eights and the Reo six. Although the Reo Royale, hailed as Reo's greatest motor car achievement, has been a center of public Interest since its introduction, the Reo Plying Cloud model 30 eight, and the Flying Cloud model 25 six, too, have achieved great popularity, Mr.

Woodward says. The entire line is marked by distinctive bod7 lines, following the aerodynamic principle, with the most complete expression of that design being found in the Reo Royale. SWEEPING CURVES Sweeping curves, carried without a break from the front bumper, through the hood, windshield and top lines to the gasoline tank and rear trunk rack, distinguish all Reo Royale models. The new Reo Royale body design has been watched with interest by automotive engineers since the line was first introduced. Wind tunnel snd road tests have proved that the aerodynamic design is remarkably effective in cutting down the tremendous wind resistance usually Tencountered at high road speeds.

In addition, the curved lines of the Reo Royale add a distinctive beauty that only smooth flowing lines can give, Mr. Woodward believes. The top and body lines of the Royale are found also in the Reo Flying Cloud models, modified at the radiator and hood, but Identical in most details of body construction. Ths Reo Royale models being exhibited at the show are a five-passenger sedan, a four-passenger Victoria, and a coupe with rumble seat. The Flying Cloud eight is represented by a four-passenger Victoria and a five-passenger sedan, and the Flying Cloud six models are a two-passenger coupe and a five-passenger sedan.

MECHANICAL FEATURES One of the outstanding mechanical features of the Reo models is the new Reo-built motor. The Reo Royale is powered by a straight eight-in-line L-head motor, developing 125 horsepower. The engine is cast en bloc, of chrome nickel alloy, a metal of finer grain and texture than the usual cast iron. Being more compact, it makes the block wear longer. The crank-case is integral with the motor.

The Reo motor is suspended in live rubber at four points, with rigid supports that have no metal contact. Thus insulates the car against motor impulses, which cannot be transmitted along the frame. Road shocks, too, are lessened. Further smoothness is Insured by the use of a nine-bearing crankshaft, statically and dynamically balanced, and counter-balanced. The Lo-Ex trunk type pistons permit much closer fitting, and provide greater compression and more power.

The transmission contains Reo's exclusive silent-second feature. By the use of herringbone gears Reo's transmission makes gear shifting easy and quiet, and insures highspeed silence during intermediate-speed operation. The Reo Royale Is built with low, weeping lines and mounted with aileron-type fenders, and it has a front-end design that aids in the forming of a complete ensemble. Reo Royale models are capable of 125 miles per hour, it is claimed, and allow extremely rapid acceleration. The Reo Flying Cloud models, both the six and the eight, share the quality of the Reo Rovale.

Mr. Woodward says. Except for the radiator design and the greater range of body styles the Flying Clouds closely resemble the Royale. CONTAIN ROOM The dimensions of all Reo models are such that the interior of every Reo is extremely roomy. Front and rear seats are wider than those usually found in the largest, highest-priced cars.

Mr. Woodward savs. In the construction of the sedan body structural steel type of framework is employed from the benter-post forward, and in the other models a proportionate amount of steel is used. This construction keeps the front end extremely rigid. The structural steel type of framework Is possible because nf Reo's nonmovable, extremely strong wtuusmeia.

eaieiy glass is used in the windshield, doors and windows. This, together with the rltrid. ity of the windshield frame, makes serious accident because of flying kiaa unpoesiDie. The Reo Royale Instrument panel la a three-group cluster, with a iov box in the upper center. To the left of the glove box the group contains a ciocK-iype speedometer, oil pres sure gauge and indicator.

A co-incidental lock, practically theft- proor, centers the lower group. To uc iert of this is the choke and carburetor control. The the richt is the spark control and Instrument usiu control.
