He Intimated he would veto any bill permitting prize fighting. MIKE MURpnY. Was not the Wliolo Thin Among the Stockholm Athletic 'liwnors After All. Minneapolis Journal: They are still at It down East, attempting to grab off the glory for the splendid work of the American athletes In the Olympic games as a personal due of Mike Murphy. With some danger of being regarded as guilty of lese ma-jeste, it might be opined that there are others besides Michael Murphy who should be mentioned.

Mike Murphy is unquestionably a great trainer, but he falls far short of deserving all the credit for the winning of the Olympic games. Glenn Warner it was who developed, trained Chanslor Lyon Motor Supply Loi Angeles San Francisco Saattlo Portland Fresno Spokan Wholesale and Retail AUTOMOBILE SUPPLIES Agency KELLY-RACING TIBES range Indian Into the world's most versatile athlete of the present generation. If we mistake not. Murphy had nothing to do with Ralph Craig or the pole vaulters or the Jumpers. He did prepare the Penn men in the Olympic games, and his work was well done.

The American Olympic team was developed before Murphy ever saw the most of them, and Murphy's fool friends are putting him in a bad light by attempting to grab for him laurels to which he does not seem fully entitled. Murphy would not claim such things for himself as are being claimed for him. He is not that stripe of a man. It is an Injustice to other less-famed trainers to have their products blandly attributed to Murphy as some of the eastern writers, with their usual provincial complacency, are doing. Murphy is big enough and well enough known by past performances as a trainer to stand upon his own merits without having his misguided friends attempt to seize for him leaves of bay rightfully belonging to other men.

Oreat credit for the winning at Stockholm rightfully belongs to Murphy, but let us not forget a few of the ICraneelelns, Warners and less conspicuous handlers of athletes who found some of these men, coached and made them and then turned over the perfect machine to the eastern leader, selected by the Sullivan regime to act as supervisor while the games were actually In progress. There Is credit enough and plenty for all. Mike Murphy, through the activity of a certain clique, is getting more than hla rightful share. HARVARD-CORNELL MEET. BOSTON.

the pitching was ao good, this time that the fans hardly noticed the time slipping away. When there are but ten swats Jn a game and but five pasties, not many men are liable to reach first, and things are bound to hum. Mohler was again the star of the day, for he made two pretty hits and two pluys that would make some of the big bush second basemen look like Prof. Wilson. When a man gets half of the hits of his team in a game and hows two fancy plays, all the knock-ers in his poor old home town will have to lay off on account of Blckncss when they hear the sad news.

In the first inning after Carlisle and Kane had doubled, Hosp sacrificed a bunt. Henley grabbed the ball end threw wide to first, but the old reliable Mohler was there and by a great catch took the throw, but he fell full length on the ground and Just managed to touch the bag with his left foot. He was up like a flash in time to prevent the speedy Kane from even trying to score from third base. Again in the sixth he ran far over second base from his regular position and scooped up Hosp's nasty grounder And caught the runner at first by a great throw. Only a left-handed man could have marie the assist.

Every time the Kid went to the plate he was applauded, which shows that a prophet Is without horror in his own country, but not here. Doubles by Carlisle and Kane scored the Tigers' first run In the first inning. Kane went to third on Hosp's sacrifice and scored on Brashear'g out at first on a grounder to McArdle. In the second, a pass to Lltschi, McDonnell's sacrifice, Agnew's out at first on a grounder to third and Hitt's swat to right scored the third and final run. Although Gedoon tripled to right in the fourth with but one out and he got there In the second with but one out, the Seals could not score a run off Hltt until the ninth, which shows how good Hltt was.

In the ninth, Wufill started off by popping to Urashear. Schmidt, batting for Howard, was an easv infield out at first. Oedeon drew a pass and McArdle and Mohler singled, filling the bases. Then Oorhan was put in to bat for Felts, and Hltt, rattled probably by the yelling of the fans, walked him, forcing In Gedeon with the only Seal run. With two on bases Hartley was put in to bat for Berry, but grounded to second and was thrown out at flrRt, Hltt thus pulling himself out of a very tight hole.

Some of the knockers call it luck, but It was nothing but good pitching that won for him. Lltschi made a beautiful assist on Felts's grounder over second in the fifth, but while there were several other neat stunts the game was not remarkable for fancy fielding, for the hitting was too light. No chance for fancy fielding when the p-ltehers will not loosen up. Hltt never did and Henley was never in danger after the second. The score: 1 SAN FRANCISCO.
