PRO HOCKEY Local sportsToday 20-3), 6:50 m. (Fox or Fox Sports Net) Monday. Oct. 22 Associated Press Louisville quarterback Dave Ragone, left, is sacked by Southern Mississippi's Greg Brooks on Tuesday night in Louisville. Southern Miss' first miscue helped Louisville to a 3-0 lead.

Kenneth Johnson fumbled a punt five minutes into the game, setting Smith's career-long 48-yard field goal with 9:24 left in the first quarter. Chris Johnson atoned for his cousin's mistake a minute later, taking a screen pass from Kelly and outrunning Louisville's defense down the middle of the field for a 73-yard scoring play. Seattle at New York, 7:20 p.m., if necessary By Chris Duncan Associated Press LOUISVILLE The University of Louisville's defense was just a little better and more opportunistic than Southern Mississippi's. Nathan Smith kicked three field goals, and the Cardinals scored 16 points off three Southern Mississippi turnovers in a 24-14 victory Tuesday night The Eagles (3-2, 1-2 Conference USA) were allowing only 10 points per game. The Cardinals (6-1, 2-0) were giving up 16 but made more defensive plays when it counted against the Eagles.

"Coach (John Smith) told us both teams had good defenses. I guess you could say we had the better defense," said Dewayne White, who had two of Louisville's seven sacks. The Eagles led 14-6 when quarterback Jeff Kelly fumbled at the Southern Miss 9 with 12:54 left Scott Lopez recovered for Louisville, and sophomore tight end Richard Owens made his second career touchdown catch on the next play. Dave Ragone fumbled the snap from center Ariel Rodriguez on the 2-point conversion, but Ragone picked up the ball and found J.R. Russell wide open in the end zone to tie it at 14.

Ragone finished 17-for-32 for 186 yards. He was sacked a season-high six times. Luckily for Ragone, Louisville's defense made even more big plays. "When things don't go right, we find ways to make plays," Ragone said. "It goes to show you, we can win any way." Safety Anthony Floyd intercepted Kelly's pass near midfield three minutes later, setting up Smith's 37-yard field goal with 7:30 remaining.

Floyd, who had three interceptions against Southern Miss last season, moved into second place on Louisville's career list with his 15th pickoff. The Eagles reached midfield on their final drive, but Jeromy Freitag sacked Kelly and forced a fumble. Chad Lee recovered and ran to the 2 with 1:27 remaining, and Tony Stallings scored on Louisville's next play. "Very simply, we self-destructed. We can't make that many mistakes and win," Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower said.

"The bottom line is turnovers. They deserved to win." Southern Miss, the league's worst rushing team, finished with only seven net rushing yards on 31 carries. "We did a great job of stopping the run and forcing them to pass," White said. "We had them on their heels, got some turnovers and sacks." the Seattle Mariners. "I think a lot of people wanted to see this going into the postseason," Jeter said Tuesday. "Seattle, obviously, has had a great season, the best record in the history of the American League," the Yankees' star said. "And now, we stand in their way of winning a championship. And they stand in our way of winning another one." The Mariners, the team that could not lose, against the Yankees, the team that wouldn't be beaten.

"I guess that's the way it was meant to be," Mariners manager Lou Piniella said. A rematch of last year's tense ALCS, a series in which Roger Clemens buzzed Alex Rodriguez in helping New York win in six games. The Yankees, trying to become the first team to win four straight World Series crowns since Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle helped the Bronx Bombers do it a half-century ago. "If you're going to go to the World Series, you might as well go through New York," said Seattle reliever Jeff Nelson, who spent the previous five seasons with the Yankees. "At least someone is going to be in the World Series for the fourth year in a row either them or me." The Mariners, who tied a major league record by winning 116 games, broke New York's AL mark of 114 set in 1998.

Pettitte will start the opener in 'the best-of-seven series today against A-fron Sele at Safeco Field. Both teams are coming off stirring comebacks in the first round of the playoffs. The Yankees became the first club ever to win a best-of-five series after losing the first two games at home. New York rallied with three straight, startling victories over Oakland.

"Of course, if we were not playing" the Yankees, I'd probably want the Yankees to win," Seattle designated hitter Edgar Martinez said. "But we're playing the Yankees, and we want to win." Jeter, who hit .444 against Oakland and made two sensational plays in the field, is sure that others would like to'see the Yankees lose, too. "I don't think the nation is rooting for us.
