WHERE A WiTIM Chamber Maid Carries Large Bundle of Towels flo Room of Recluse, Injuries Knee.

Gets Damages. The penchant of the late Mai. Phipps, the widely-known multimillionaire recluse of the Hotel Van Nuys, for clean towels at this late date, promises to put a tiny dent in the profits of the E. Potter Company, which conducts the hosterly. Ida Turner, a former employee of the hotel, yesterday got Judgment before Justice Summerlield for $159.43 against the company for an Injury to ht-r left knee, suffered while taking bundle of towels to Phipps' room.

Just before he died. According to the complainant there were sixty towels in the bundle, or one day's supply. They filled both her arms and obscured her vision. She said the eJevwtor she had to tak was a foot or so below the floor. But ehe didn't know this until she stepped and fell.

The doctors pronounced her Injury an aggravated contusion. It temporarily Incapacitated her and she sought damages of $299.99. CASTS SPELL OVER GIRL? ather Alleges Is Chuclie of I'nuTiipulous Terson and Is Granted Warrant. Asserting that a man named C. J.

Hunt has cast dome sort of spell over his young daughter, Sylvia, which makes the girl a slave to his will, Charles Silkwood, of Santa Ana, yesterday secured a warrant from Justice Summerlield for the alleged charmer. Silkwood told the court that Sylvia was a most obedient daughter until she met Hunt, but that now he can do nothing with her. He said she occasionally comes home, but only stays a short time and goes right back to the man. It is asserted by the father that the girl apparently is afraid of Hunt, but that she goes and comes at his beck and call no matter what Is said to her. rfustiee Smnrnerfield lost no time in signing the warrant.

MYSTERY OF DISAPPEARANCE OF WOMAN'S WEALTH. Worth Hundred Thousand Only a Few Months Ago, Remains Now on Slab in Morgue, With No Money to Defray Funeral Expenses. Search for Relatives. Lying on a slab In the morgue of Cunningham O'Connor Is the body of Mrs. Maude Taylor, who a few months ago was the possessor of a fortune of $100,000.

The remains are now in danger of being burled in a pauper's grave. The disappearance of the estate and the sudden changein the position of Mrs. Taylor are enveloped with enough uncertainty to give tho case 'an air of mystery. Public Administrator Bryson bus taken charge of tho case in the absence of any known relatives, and is endeavoring to explore some of the. dark angles of the situation.

The case first came to the attention of the court when Mrs. George Ives, who had been the nurse of Mrs. Taylor applied to have her charge do-ciarcd Incompetent und herself mudo guardian. Such action was taken. It was represented to the court at that time that Mrs.

Taylor had sud- ocniy. dissipated her wealth. It is understood that she began to squander it in large amounts before "Hurry Cp Harry" Brown was sent to the and while ho was operating a bucket shop. Other soldiers "of tainted fortune are believed to have plucked her purse. Afte she had been declared Incompetent, Mrs.

Taylor was taken to the County Hospital for treatment. A day or two later her guardian was Riarmea to find her charge had dis- nppeared. A search was made and was rounti that Hev. Mr. Brady had 0 reMW 10 "er caleo xvi in imv.uu Banuiorium.

Mrs. Taylor dpj sutlder.ly on the 17th Inst. Dr. ttosss Jloore who attended her for a ehort time, refused to sfga death certificate until an autopsy had been performed. Tho outcome of the autopsy has not been made public, but It Is thought that no suspicious circumstances were developed as the case wan not reported tho Coroner.
