According to the statement made by Mr. Wise, the party waa running along at a fair rate of speed when the wagon cut off all means of escape. Instead of stopping the driver of the milk wagon continued his Journey, and was lost In the distance before the police arrived. HELD BY A HAIR, A Young French Diplomat Does Clever Stunt for an Ex-Governor of the Alsace-Lorraine Provinces. London Tlt-Blta: France Is laughing over the reply of a young diplomat to a challenge given by an ex-Governor of the annexed provinces, Alsace-Lorraine.

The two were neighbors at an official banquet recently, and the young Frenchman was talking of the skill of the French workman. "However ugly a thing may be, he seems able to turn It into a pretty object," he said. The old Prussian, with an Impatient gesture, pulled a gray hair from his beard. "Let him make something pretty out of that," he said, gruffly, handing it to his companion. The Frenchman smiled and carefully placed the hair In his pocketbook.

A week later the German received a small box. In it waa a gold tie pin, the head representing the Prussian eagle on a rock. and Mrs. Wise started with Mr. Notley, a machinist, who lived at the same house, for a drive around the suburbs before eating supper. When the crash came Mr. Notley was thrown to the pavement and received a severe basal fracture of the skull.

Mrs. Wise, who waa on a rear seat of the automobile, was thrown from the machine, and suffered injuries that will probably prove serious, according to police surgeons. Owing to the condition of the patients, little light waa thrown upon the accident by the detectives, but after an Investigation the officers decided that the collision waa purely accidental. Call or write. Dr. O. W. Shore, Letts, Store, which was opened yesterday In to dwell during the hours of their downtown life." It waa upon thla phase of the new store that Mr.

LetUfa mind seemed to dwell. There was no boasting aa to the greatness of the achievement In havinit built up in the few years of his endeavor a business of which any merchant prince in this nation of merchant nrincea might be proud, no esti mating the gain in volume of business over that of others, or ever that of the humble beginnings of the business only a hearty thankfulness that the new store would offer to the workers within Its walls every facility for health, for equilibrium, for better body and brain building, which could go on without interruption during the hours of their working day. "Have you seen the hospital How did it strike you 7 Did you see the silence-room? That has been one of my dream to have a place where women when under stress of weariness or nerve strain could retire for com- plete rest and absolute silence. How much they have needed such a place." None save women can fully realize the boon conferred by such a "chapel of silence" within the busy business place. And this is but one of the many features throughout for the employees of this big store.

It was Impossible not to see that the mind of the proprietor of the new store was far more concerned with these features than with the elegance of the place, or even with Its merchandising possibilities, although these were not, of course, forgotten. If anyone had ever believed that more good luck had enabled a man to rear such a merchandising home, one of the first remarks as to the effect of the war sit uation upon the merchandise of our country would have dissipated such an idea, it is roresight which leads to success, In buying and selling merchandise quite aa much as in statesmanship. To look ahead and estimate conditions and possibilities and to be ready to meet them. Mr. Letts told something of hla ef fort to learn of the wants and needs of the people in hla employ and out lined tne policy which he had at last put in effect.

In order to do thla An association waa formed among the employees, at the suggestion of the proprietor, no one higher than a salesman or saleswoman being admitted to this organization. From among these, five were chosen to look Into all matters pertaining to the welfare of those in the store. Every one waa to feel free to place hla case before this committee of Ave, and as its members were of themselves there could be no barrier to withhold them. This committee of five waa to have free access to the proprietor at all times, exactly as would the member or a ramny xeei rree to take the troubles of the family to the father. It was understood, fully, that no one would ever lose his position, because of reporting any case cf Injustice or of need or other trouble, Thla system has worked perfectly.

The voluntary testimonials from the employees to their employer, tell more plainly than anything else mve perhaps the air of almost reverenoe which pervades the ranks, when speaking of Mr. Letts, the high esteem in which the head of this house la held. The fact that almost without ex. ceptlon the men occupying high po- niiions me store nave had their entire training in the store, growing up from mere boyhood and receiving their entire education in the store, tells more of the character of the man who has built up the business than does anything else In this connection, perhaps. Business acumen consist not in doing everything oneself, but in being able to delegate one's work being able to project oneself throughput a situation by means of others.

It is doubtless aupremacy in this regard, In the selection of lieutenants, which distinguishes the broad-minded and successful merchant And Mr. Letts learned early in' hla career to wisely choose the men who were to be hla coadjutors. and a quarter dollars. OVER sixty thousand persons visited the Broadway Department Store In the first unit of the new quarters yesterday. If there had ever been a doubt In anyone's this store Is a tore "for We people, of the people, Iny the people," that doubt was yesterday fckJ at rest. It was really Interesting S'atch the way In which people took jpssetiBlon of the place. They penetrated to the most remote parts of the big structure, and without exception made themselves at home.

It was, In fact, as though they naa aesignea ana Duiit tne piace themselves. The spacious balconies were enjoyed to the fullest, the dressing-rooms, equipped with the latest of all conveniences, were forthwith made useful, and, In fact, all who made the place their obectlve I point, seemed to feel themselves a part of a large family, privileged to live in the new home, as amicably and as confidently as they had in the old place, which had during the night been abandoned to the past The transition from the old to the tw waa one of the marvels of facility in modern moving methods. Un- i til the closing hour on Saturday last, business was carried along In the accustomed groove in the old store and on Monday morning, as if by magic, the same business was going forward in the same smooth way, in the new habitation. That a thousand persons helped to do the moving, doea not lessen the marvel of it, for system and system only could accomplish such results, regardless of numbers. ITS A MARVEL.

The new Broadway Department Store the half of It which is completed, Is a model of construction and convenience. The broad expanse of plate glass windows across the Broadway front, with the rich mahogany pillars and fine mirrors reflecting the tasteful merchandise and decorations, give earnest of the excellence within the store, but one must study well the interior before fully realizing all that la embodied therein. The manager had called my attention to the three sets of broad, light stairways leading from story to story and I had even made the trip to the eighth floor, ust to prove how vrry easy were the steps, and no de tail of the spacious rest-rooms for employees, as well as for the patrons of the store, the well-furnished bal-a conies, where shoppers may meet or await each other, had escaped my notice. We had visited the great auditorium, the cafeteria, where an employee, who knew, assured me that foods would be dispensed not only without profit, but at actually less than cost, and the coiy lunch-ecnettery, below stairs; we had taken a peek at the big soda fountain on the first floor and at the one in the basement, or as it might more an proprlately be said on the "subfloor." and I had noticed that there were rto dark corners, no narrow hallways, and, in fact, that the plana of the place seemed perfect. I had s- certalned that the floor space occupied waa about 96,600 square feet and that when the other Bide was completed that over ten acres of space would be occupied quite a rancn, you see.

i naa admired the many rows of huge and brilliant lights, wWch'in snowy globes, seemed like many moons, shedding their effulgence upon the shoppers and the merchandise, and the thought came into my mind: "I wonder what are the feelings of the man who is at the neaa or an this he whose dream must be fruiting here and now he who haa for years been building toward this great accomplishment." I heard that Mfc. Letts was in the house and I determined to get a glimpse of the wonderful new store through his eyes, If possible. THROUGH HIS EYES. I found Mr. Letts In his office, as composed as though nothing unusual waa going on, and when I went to the i heart of the matter, asking him what to him was of most concern In the new home, he said without hesitation, and so earnestly that no one could for a moment doubt that the speech came from his soul: "I am most pleased that at last my people, those who have worked so faithfully, can have plenty of heat, plenty of light, every comfort In which The Wholesome Beverage Every quality that a good drink should have none that it should not have: that's what you get in mat lmiks Health With Sociability OFFER MF.IWISEfl FREE great apeclal offer.
