Devine testified today that Schenck left with him willingly because his name had been linked with rumors about the Lindbergh case and he was uneasy. ROOMED NEAR ESTATE The detective said Schenck roomed with a man named Pat Lane in a house less than a mile from CoL Lindbergh's estate. "A private road connected the Lane house with Col. Lindbergh's home," he said. "Bloodhounds once followed a trail from the colonel's place to the woodpile at the Lane home." Devine related he read that Schenck had said he saw an automobile parked near the spot where the Lindbergh baby's body was found, six hours before the slain child was discovered.

(JP) A new cancer-growing tube of glass was announced tonight by Johns Hopkins University and the Carnegie Institution of Washington in the American Journal of Cancer. The tube works like a revolving concrete mixer and is an improved method of growing human cancer cells artificially. In it various types of cancer live harmlessly, growing for months. Scientists watch them under microscopes. The malignant cells, obtained from real cancers, adhere to the inside surface of the tube.

As i revolves slowly at the rate of about one turn an hour, nourishing liquids within the tube feed the living cells. Thus the scientists are able to simulate in plain view many of the conditions which keep cancers alive in normal bodies. The new tube was devised by George O. Gey of the surgical pathological laboratory of Johns Hopkins, with financial aid of the Carnegie Institution. GTHOUARD.

Merchants Back Check Scheme to Revive Business PITTSBURGH, March 1. (JP) "Prosperity checks" appeared today in suburban Homestead latest of numerous experiments in Western Pennsylvania to revive traSe.

Forty merchants have deposited money, making the checks 100 per cent good but they will not be honored for thirty days. Leo L. Half, furniture dealer and president of the association sponsoring the check plan, explained: "People will spend checks where they will not spend cash. Circulating once every day, 1000 $1 checks are of more value to a community than $50,000 lying idle." The merchants ask customers to accept the checks as "change." They agree in turn to accept them as payment for goods. Actor Among 107 Deportees Europe Bound NEW YORK, March 1, (JP) Paul Spruce Clay, 24-year-old English actor, was among 107 deportees who sailed for Europe today aboard the liner President Roosevelt.

Clay overstayed his permit by two years and was ordered deported after a hearing before a special board of inquiry in Los Angeles. The actor said he was told if he paid his own transportation he would not have the onus of "deportation" marked against him. He said he paid his way to New York and his fare on the ship.
