The report showed that many parts of the district are without street lights. An attempt will be made to have arc lights provided at once. Lawrence Holmes, in an Interesting address, showed how the hill property can be Improved at slight expense. His Ideas included the planting of shade trees, the laying of walks and the setting out of flower -beds. There were short talks by others.

highlandTark. Occidental College celebrated the falsing of the handsome endowment fund with appropriate exercises on Wednesday morning at chapel hour. The will assure a new life to the Presbyterian College and already there Is said to have come Into the Institution added spirit. John Willis Baer, the president-elect, will not take office until May. Until that time Rev.

Young will be the acting first officer. Men of the track team are working hard for the try-out this afternoon, when classes from the college will -compete. The contest, it is thought, lies between the seniors of the college and the academy classes. Water mains have been laid en Avenues E4 and 55 east of Pasadena avenue. Mrs.

John Drake, a pioneer of Los Angeles, aged 60, died at her home on Avenue 60 on Sunday night. Mrs. M. Blake is completing a fine vesidence on Avenue 6 near the Arroyo Seco. Robert W.

Perm of No. 5025 Monte Vista Btreet, has been commissioned by the Union Oil Company to go to Panama, where he will have charge of a pipe line to be SOUTH LOS ANGELES. BEGINNING with a newsboys' nickel, a fund has been secured for the erection of a church building on the corner of Blxth and Mateo Btreet. The church congregation baa grown from a Sunday-school organized by Miss Belle White, who was forced to seek larger and btcr quarter for her clauses. Blx months ago the school had a membership of forty-five and was growing; there Is now a church organization with 125 members, and a Sunday-school of 200 members.

The work is a success. Sixty girls are taking a regular course In physical culture, and the uniformed class at work is a pretty sight. Nearly fifty boys have been taken from the streets and are doing good work In the school. From the nickel contributed by the "newsie," with faith enough to believe a church could be built, $6000 has been secured and the church is almost completed end plans are being made for the dedication In a short time. Rev.

T. O. Atterbury is the pastor. The organization will be known as the People's Church, and will be conducted along -institutional lines. Those In charge have plans for the branching out of the work and other buildings will be erected, one for working girls In the downtown district.

That the sewer system may be laid as soon as possible, residents of this section will attempt to hasten the work by an appeal to the Council. The need of a sewer down Central avenue has already been presented to the city officials and the desire is that the pipes may be laid before any work Is done on the paving of the avenue. Already there are many laterals on Intersecting streets, and the South Los Angeles Improvement Association have taken steps to ascertain what will be" done with these when the main sewer is UNIVERSITY. A large gathering of students and friends of the university attended an Informal reception tendered by the members of the faculty of the various colleges Friday evening. Fitzgerald, principal owner of the Edna and Golf Chief properties In the Panamint, has brought about the determination that their equipment will bo purchased at once. Dr. 8. M. Slo-cum, vice-president and general manager of the company.

The Edna will go to a depth of 1000 feet and at the Gold Chief a new hoisting plant will be built, new bunk houses, and sub stantial buildings for the superintend ent's house. The camp has uncovered some of the bet ore at a depth of 365 feet The vein that started with an outcropping of eight Inches at the surface Is now twenty-one feet between walls at the 300 foot level with the gold values in creasing satisfactorily. When this camp was opened there was little prospecting in this region of the Panamint because of the scarcity of water. What the Edna people used was hauled fifteen miles and was of bad quality at that The shaft In the Edna now is making- 6000 gallons of water every twenty-four hours.

This at 365 feet. It Is pure in Its analysis. free from alkali. The Immediate region of the Edna Is now more generally prospected, but principally by wealthy companies as prospecting there Is still an expensive proposition. The most unusual find 1b one of rich opals which Is beinar worked at five miles distance.

An outfit of the San Bernandlno Oil Company Is down 400 feet, about eight miles from the Edna, where they claim Indi cations for oil are excellent. With Gerald P. Fitzgerald there Is Interested also Frank Andrews, member of the New Tork Stock Exchange. Dr. locum and a local man are the only others Interested In the company.

His return to the mine will be made In short time, as he has other properties under development near the mouth of Wlngate Pass. The group of claims' there Is led In showing by the Kin Midas. The Mono Mining and Milling Company of this city, operating the Sacramento mine, a property developed by Mexicans for years until Ave years ago located fifteen miles north of Bishop, In Mono county, reports having a strike of ore five feet 'wide and showing free gold In every piece plainly visible to the naked eye, according to the state ment from William Moots, the mine foreman. The mine was started up on January 1. There are about 2000 feet of development, mostly the work of former own ers, 1500 tons ere declared by the com' pany to be In sight today with an av erage value of not less than $10. Four to five hundred ounces Is what Is cal culated to be in the ore just uncovered, The property is worked by tunnel the longest being 400 feet in from the face of the mountain. Offlcera of the company state that Indications on the face are that the vein goes down 2000 feet from the apex.

The Mexican owners carried the ore on their backs to an ancient arrastra, with which they extracted paying values. A forty-ton mill has been erected. The company la a Los Angeles cor poration, all of Its stockholders being residents oT this city. F. E.

"While no other local companies have yet gone Into Mono, the border county lying Juts north of Inyo, and crossed by the Carson Colorado branch of the Southern Paciflo running to Keeler, Is getting a fair share of the effects of the mining revival. In the White Mountains, where the Sacramento mine Is located, San Francisco and Denver capital has taken hold of properties, and work Is active. Another mine that is said to be showing up well Is the Toledo, and a third is the Tabor, owned by Coloradoans. The Indian Queen, at Summit. Just across the State line. In Esmeralda county, at the northern ex tremity of the mountain range, baa just been taken charge of by a company In which Gov. Pardee Is reported to be a heavy stockholder.

It Is an old property that was worked suc cessfully years ago. TO RESUME AT MOJAVE. In the Karma, at Mojave, two strikes are reported, one at 370 and one at 650 feet. In the second work has penetrated fourteen feet, with no wall in Big-tit, and the first has just been brought to light (Like the other mines at Mojave, except the Queen Esther, the Harms la running with greatly reduced force, doing only development. It is expected that more extensive operations will be resumed here, and on the Exposed Treasure and Echo in the near future.

Those who are behind the project urge that the thoroughfare will be one of easiest In the city to pave, as the section of the street along which asphalt desired is comparatively level. The line will extended beyond the city limits to Rowan avenue eastward, and thanco north on Rowan avenue to Brooklyn avenue.

Circulars have been sent to the members announcing the apportionment expected from each, and there has been a hearty response. A dual track" meet will be held Wednesday afternoon on the university oval, the contestants being the track team of the Polytechnic High School and a team of the university composed only of men who did not win a monogram last season.

EAST LOS ANGELES. Tons of gravel taken from the bed of the Los Angtles River in East Los Angeles have lowered the waterway many feet. The fear is held that during a freshet there will be danger to surrounding property because of the large volume of water gathered in the hole dug for the gravel pit. In several places the banks of the river have been made a sheer ''gravel wall twenty feet deep. It is expected this will cave at places and undermine the property along the Steps will be taken to obviate this danger as far as possible.

Much of the gravel was removed for work on the Santa F6 Railway tracks. Mrs. Bert Levy of St Louis Is visiting her parents. Rev. and Mrs.

Ground was broken on the Jeffries place on Monday and the work will be pushed rapidly.

Stakes are laid as far as Cypress street Poles and the overhead wires are placed for a considerable distance. The line will enter the city at Avenue 28 and will Join the Unlversity-Garvansa lines at the Intersection of Avenue 28 and Dayton avenue. There is said to be a desire on tha part of the railway company to extend the line to Verdugo Park, provided the right of way can be secured.
