Ijke most incoming college freshmen. Joe Meyers.

Ihe slightly-cocky high school hotshot, had lo make some changes and come down a few notches before be would become Joe Meyers, average college tennis player. Undefeated in league mlaches his last two years in high school, Joe's dominance of the Mission Valley Athletic League had earned him a full tennis scholarship to one of the premier tennis schools in Northern California At San Jose State though, things were going tobea little more difficult. "I knew it was going to tougher at San Jose." said the heav illy-tanned Meyers in an understatement. "It (the competition I was something I should have been prepared for. bul wasn't it was a real slmggleat first.

"In high school, it was easy lo be cocky." continued the SJS sophomore. "The last two years especially. I had Ihe league pretty much to myself. I had some coming down to do when I got to San Jose. I was just another player, battling for my life just lo make the team." Meyers did make Ihe cut.

playing second doubles with Bruce Keltog most of his fresh- nian year and winning the Pacific Coast Alh- leticAssn. doubles crown with Kellog. This past season was a "fun" one for the former Washington High star, as he returned to his first love, playing singles, in number three position on the Spartans' ladder. Meyers also teamed with top man Andy Moffat lo formthe first doubles team. Joe won Ihe PCAA singles at Long Beach State and placed second in the doubles to Long Beach's Tom Smith and Neil Bissent.

Competing in the NCAA Tourney for the first time. Meyers overcame some early nervousness to make it to the second round in singles and into the third round in doubles Moffat. effect of coach Butch Krikorian's teaching have rounded off some of the rough edges from Joe's game, turning what was a slightly unorthodox style into a sound, fundamental game. However, in the mental part of lennis. Meyers is slill learning.

It's all a continuation of (he maturing process which started his first day at SJS. This season also. Joe had to make some cnanges. He was back playing singles for Ihe first lime in a year arid Moffat was a radically different player lhan Kellog. "Bruce and Andy were (wo really different players to team with." explained Meyers.

"Bruce and I played a (asl-paeed game, but kepi Ihe tall in play a lo! longer than Andy likes lo. He has a powerful serve and crunching volley, so the were usually over in a few shots and il really pul Ihe pressure on both of us." Meyers' inexperience in the subtleties of lennis almost cost Joe Ihe PCAA singles crown against Mark Marcini of Long Beach Stalein Ihe finals. The former Washington High star had defeated Marcini in straight sets when the two learns met during the dual med season in San Jose, bul Marcini kepi talking about how he would get even with Meyers at Long Beach at I he conference finals He almost pulled it off. taking Meyers' concentration away enroule lo taking the first sel. 6-3 before Joe won Ihe next Iwo sets.

6-1. 6-1 for (he crown. -I really thought I was going to lose." said Meyers with a snake of the head. "He really had me psyched out. But I just put it out of my mind and started to play my game." Although the "psych" job by Marcini nearly cosi him the championship.

Meyers says he wouldn't hesitaletousethesame "1 ricks." -I think I would use anything (o win a xaid Meyers. "That includes playing someone's mind, it's all a part of the changing te nis Hhich is the sport become more popular. The etiquette of (he game is loosening up a little and that's Kood for the sport." Contrary lo some players. Joe enjoys play- infl before an appreciative, enthusiastic. lmi(i orosvci.

"Dead silence during a malch is boring to me." explained Meyers. "That's why I like the World Team Tennis concept. If the fans aren't allowed participate, they will slop coming lo see lennis." Joe favors the colorful players on the current professional lour. Jimmy Connors and Ilie Xalase lo name and whal they are doing For Ihe game. "It's (he same case of the game loosening up a little." continued Ihe former Husky.

"The colorful outfits and expressive players make the game and players easier lo idenlify with for most fans." Although he didn't last long in either Ihe or doubles competition. Meyers was jus! glad to have had the experience of being in (he iVCAA tourney. being Ihere was fantastic." said Meyers with a gleam. "The best amateurs in the world were there and it was really something just lobe a part of it." This year would have been a good chance for Meyers to do better, wilh some early- round upsets and defending singles champion Sar.dy Mayer of Stanford not participaling. "If I could have worked just a litlle harder during the year, it may have been different." remarked Meyers.

"With the people who were missing from the tourney. 1 could have been seeded. Rut 1 goofed off a few- limes during Ihe year and ihal's what cosl me." Like most tennis players. Meyers enjoys playing just for thesakeof playing. "Even if I had the chance.

1 don'l think I would go lo Stanford." remarked Meyers after some thought. "Their teams have been fantastically successful, NCAA team tillesi. but I don't think that even the attraction of being associated with the champs would be enough if I didn't play. "At Sianford. they have tremendous depth." continued Joe.

"They have, more players than they know what lo do with. Al San Jose. I have a chance to play for a school with a good pmram which plays the major schools. I couldn't ask for more." For his remaining two years at SJS. Meyers slill has some goals left to be Ihe top singles player on the team, win both (he singles and doubles conference championships, and place higher at Ihe NCAA Now home for the summer.

Joe is working iis a parl-lime assistant teaching pro al San Jose Swim and Racquet Club, under former Spartan Rodney Kop. "I really enjoy leaching." remarked Meyers. "Right now. il would be my second choice as a profession. I am majoring in pre- dental and want to have my own practice whenlgraduale." If Meyers cannot gel started as a denlist.

he nwy have a chance at Ihe new Mission Hills Tennis Club in Krcmonl as a teaching professional. He has already been offered a job there. Since his days as a skinny freshman al Washington High, when he played lennis and ran cross country in the shadow of big brolher lien. Joe ha come a long way. He is laller than his school days and a little stronger.

He i.s his own man now. slill wil the easy smile and loping shuffle which he has always had. Time.lad flown by for him. Joe is now 20. and his fulure is a prime consideration.

His final (wo years at San Jose will be important ones -I just can'l believe I am going to be a junior in college already." says Meyers with a half-laugh. "Next year. I am going lo have lo slart tiikinfi a long look al myself and see where I am going. "I am starting lo get into some classes which really eal up my lime." he continued. "Sooner or later.

1 am going In have to make a decision about whether or not I want to keep playing afler I finish'school. It's going lo be hard In choose."
