Homer Laughlin, and members of the Immediate family were at the bedside. Laughlin contracted a slight cold several days ago which gradually developed into Incipient pneumonia. He withstood the shock of the operation for appendicitis remarkably well and attending physicians thought he would recover. The pneumonia, however, proved stubborn and all efforts to check it were unavailing. Late Thursday night both lungs were said to be affected and Dr.

E. C. Moore admitted that he entertained grave fears. Thirty-six hours, he predicted, would tell the story. Immediately following the announcement that the widely-known financier was In danger, his son and members of the Immediate family went to the hospital, where they remained to the end.

He Is a man whose occupation has been that of the most honorable, and I think that counsel asked that question for Mr.

Homer Laughlin in many ways was a remarkable figure, and no man ever stood higher in the esteem of his business associates and friends. He was credited with being the best informed man in this city on European travel, having traveled extensively in all parts of Europe and the Orient. He was born at Little Beaver, Columbia county, Ohio, March 23, 1S43, and was of Scotch-Irish descent. His early education was in the public schools and later he graduted from Neville Institute. He early took an active interest in public affairs and for more than thirty years was a warm personal friend of the late President McKlnley.

Do you, gentlemen, think that I ought not to talk to you as I am talking; that I ought to keep still, retain my place in my chair and be silent under this evidence? I will not, gentlemen, as long as you give me the privilege to talk. GUILTY CONSCIENCE. I will expose this man as a hypocrite In the community. Nights will come with their black curtains to shut off the light of day. A man will lie upon his couch when the silence of the night is on, but he knows God Almighty can see Into his heart.

Through the nights that shall come and through the years that shall follow, this defendant must face his accusing conscience, and cannot escape it. He must think through those long hours of the niplit when he tosses on his restless pillow of how he perjured himself before this jury, ajid he knows that when life shall end and he shall take on the immortal life that lie must give answer to the King of the world for perjuring himself In this case, to shield himself in this case, to cover up his nefarious acts and to Keen his friends from believing In his guilt. Through all these long nights his conscience will sting him, as he thinks of the falsity of his testimony in this case. I would not go through with it for the world.
