Winfleld people have recently struck an oil gusher, and now the cities of Lamed and Dodge are organizing oil companies for the purpose of prospecting. Prof. Hay worth, of the state, university, says that indications are good for oil in much of the country underlaid with shale north and west of Dodge City to the Smoky Hill river. This includes Scott county in the oil territory. The shale land in this county is liable to prove the most valuable to its owners in Iho course of time, for oil or gas.

Governor elect Bailey has a perfect right to express a choice for speaker of the incoming legislature. Even more, for the reason that his relationship with the legislature, as governor of the state, amounts to more than that of any or all senatorial aspirants. There seems to be Done but Congressman Curtis and the newspapers booming him for the senate that object to Governor Bniley expressing a choice for speaker. Bailey, as governor, will officiate at the capital of Kansas. Curtis is re-elected to discharge his duty at Washington as a congressman, hence why should Governor Bailey play second fiddle to Curtis' senatorial aspirations? Tbe people of Kan-Bas and a majority of tbe members of tbe legislature will indorse Governor Bailey's course, at the proper time.
