But if you're looking for fire and brimstone, that's not what you'll get, for this Hell's Gate i3 located In the Fraser River Canyon on the Trans-Canada Highway, just 33 miles north of Hope and 34 miles south of Lytton in British Columbia. However, Simon Fraser, who first discovered it in 1808, did describe it as an awesome gorge." For here the Fraser River with a flow of water from over 84,000 square miles roared through a passage only 110 feet wide at the rate of 22 feet per second, creating violent waves and vicious whirlpools. Still, the intrepid salmon chose it for a salmon run. In 1913-14 when the Canadian National Railway was carved through the mighty Rockies the blasting partially blocked ON THE GO Continued from First Page ers appreciate opera or even Richard Strauss. Instead, this uncultured crowd flees to the city's .beer gardens to sing along with the noisy oompah bands. Among the beer spouts of Munich, none is more famous than the ancient Hofbrauhaus, a noisy and notorious brew castle facing the old Platzl Hotel. Fat frauleins steer among tables, carrying trays dripping with beer at 65-cents a stein. Munch-eners pound their tables and shout in a raucous symphony of corn and carefree unconcern. Of a busy night, the Hofbrauhaus serves up to 5,-000 customers and the band plays on. Across the street, wall-to-wall crowds jam the Platzl, cheering a schmaltzy Bavarian peasant stage show while gulping sauerkraut, sausages and more barrels of beer. Away from the noisiness of the Hofbrauhaus and the Platzl, the bells of St. Peters, St. Michaels and St. Mary's ring out during the warm summer night.
