744 8. Spring St. Napoleons, Washlngtons In Garland Gas Ranges MERCHANTS, BEWARE 1 State Pharmacy Board to Begin Active Campaign Against Handlers of Drug Without License. Tha State Board of Pharmacy ha engaged the services of Q. A.

Lewis and N. N. Miller of this city to make a canvass of all stores in the towns and villages of Southern California, to enforce the letter of the State pilar-macy law, which prohibits the handling of drugs by any other than registered pharmacists. It is probable that there will be numerous arrests, as members of the pharmacy board declare they have begun a campaign which will enforce every provision of the law. While the law has been on the statutes of the State for two years, it is only recently that the board seems to have decided to enforce it, so far as it applies to the handling of drugs by the country stores.

This law strictly prohibits the sale of drugs by any one not registered with the board aa a licensed pharmacist, but It Joes not prevent the merchant from handling the remedies known as "patent medicines." Through efforts made through Los Angeles parties at the time of the pas-sago of the law, the merchants arc also allowed to sell certain ordinary staple drugs, and this list includes: Glauber slats, vaseline, Jamaica bay rum, condition powders, insect powders, rough on rats, turpentine, ammonia, glycerine, sheep dip, castor oil as a lubricant, cream of tartar, alum, borax, washing soda, chloride of lime, lye, wood alcohol, Paris green, blue stone, baking soda, flavoring extracts, salt peter, baking powder and all patent medicines, that Is, nit.d-lcal preparations which are registered at Washington and which t-ear the register number on the bottle or carton. There is a section of the law, however, which provides that general dealers who are two miles or more removed from the place of buhlness of a registered pharmacist may sell other household drugs and medicines, by maklwc application to, and securing from the State Board of Pharmacy a general dealer's license. The fee for such license Is $12 per year. The campaign among the country stores Is to begin in earest during the ensuing week. WILL NOT LEAVE.

Becker, Instead of Going to Europe, Will Again Appear in Public Here. Owing to the marriage of Thtlo Becker to Miss Frances Otle Chew on August 22 last, the story has been circulated that the talented pianist would leave soon for Europe. This was due to the fact that Mrs. Becker, before her marriage, traveled considerably, and it wag supposed that a trip abroad, if not to take up a permanent residence In Europe, at least to stay there for some time, would be In order. As a fact, the rumor is groundless, as Herr Becker Intends shortly to resume his public career and to make Los Angeles his permanent home.

Mr. Becker has not appeared in a public piano recital for over twelve years, and has confined himself strictly to teaching during that time. He is looking forward eagerly to the time that he will again be able to resume his career before the public, and It Is probable that at least one recital will be given in the latter part of October, under the management of J. T. Fitzgerald, of the Fitzgerald Music Company, Mr.

Becker studied under Martin Krause of Lelpslc for five years, and his playing has been testified to In the warmest terms by that master. A promising career was broken in Lelp-slo by ill health, and he was advised to come to California for a short time to recuperate.
