THE. ARGUS Page 14 Fremont Newark, California Friday, November 29, 1968 Silver Goblet Wins Thanksgiving 'Cap SAN MATED Frank Mediation's colt Majestic Prince made a successful and highly Impressive racing debut and Bright Man Stable's Silver Gobtet scored an upset victory in the a Thanksgiving Day Handicap yesterday at Bay Meadows before a holiday throng of 14,289. Majestic Prince, who was purchased last fall at the Keeneland Sales for a then record price for a yearling of a quarter of a million dollars, won the fifth race in his long awaited initial public appearance. The strikingly 'handsome chestnut son of Raise A Native scored an easy two and three quarter length triumph over 11 other maiden two- year-olds. He broke alertly, was sent to the front shortly after the start by Bill Harlack and had an easy lead coming into the stretch.

At that point, Applicator made a bold move at him but Hartack flicked him once with a left hand whip and he pulled on away while well in hand at the finish. Majestic Price covered the six furlongs in a very rapid 1:09 2-5 and he obviously could have gone faster. He if Majestic Prince Romps In Debut paid $13.00 to win. Trainer Johnny Longden, who has been more excited over this colt than any of the some 40,000 horses he rode during his amazing career, breathed a sigh of relief after the race was over. He had been "stall walking" ever since entering him Wednesday morning.

"1 know he can run, I just want him to come back in good' shape," he' said in the paddock before the race. He did just that. Silver Goblet, an outsider in the wagering, circled the field on the stretch turn in the Thanksgiving Day "Cap" and then went on- to prevail by three lengths over Chapati, an even longer shot. Scoop Time finished third in the field of nine distaff runners, with Cleo Pat fourth. Time for the mile and a sixteenth was 1:41 4-5 and Silver Goblet paid $16.60 and $7.40 across ttie board.

Chap- ali returned $34.20 to place and $12.80 to show, while Scoop Time- paid $3.60 to show. It was the first stakes victor for the three-year-old daughter of King Of The Tudors and it earned for her the filly and mare championsip of the meeting. She picked up a check for $9,425 for her efforts. Ray Bell's Higticasle looms as an odds on choice in the Bay Meadows Stakes this afternoon, as Bay Meadows presents the second of three consecutive slakes events. Nine two-year-old fillies will go postward in the six-furlong speed lest, with Highcaste being joined in the starting gate by Royal Hula, Singing Surf, Kissing Ring, Princess Angcltune, Radiant Miss, Sweet Moment and Poona Winner of the Tanforan Lassie Stakes, Highcaste was second to Mr.

Joe F. in the recent Burlingame Stakes. Under the allowance conditions of the race, she will carry the highweight of 117 pounds, with Don Pierce making up most of that impost. Alvaro Pineda pilots the speedy Kissing Ring while a Leonard guides the running Princess Hemp. Both misses annexed their last starts.

Tomorrow, a full field is ex- THE RACERS Bv PHIL RAYMOND Racers Safer Today DEVELOPMENT OF lafety equipment in racing has certainly come a long, long way since the inception of this automotive sport. During the Barney Oldfield era at the beginning of this century, about the only piece ot equipment used that had a hint of salety were goggles. And, this was completely out of necessity due to the mud and dirt being thrown off the front tires and in the I river's face. A race car driver clad in hie knickers and white thirt with hit cap turned backwards, sitting cither on a frame crosjmember or wooden box ami spinning around a dirt oval track at a speed upwards of 90 rnpti certainly was not an sight for those who thought form of safety regulations be imposed, Helmets, Belts Began In 1950 NOTHING MUCH happened in the development of safety equipment until around 1950 when crash helmets and safety bells began apvearing on the scene and occasionally a leather jacket The helmet and belt over the years have probably contributed more to the saving of lives than any ten items combined. So significant have their developments been, that most Police departments throughout the United States use crash 'helmets as standard equipment for both motorcycle and car patrolmen and seat belts have become standard equipment In all domestic cars, The leather jacket was primarily used to cut down on scrapes and scratches when a car or motorcycle rolled over and or when a driver separated himself from the behicle.

It alsc acted as a deterrent in event of fire. The only bad thing aboul this is that if the fire was severe enough, the leather wquid mell and cling to the skin. (Similar to having hot tar poured on you.) Roll Burs, Shoulder Hitrness Next THE NEXT BIG ITEM ta come along was the roll bar. In case the car went out of control and flipped over, the roll bai acted as a protective device for the driver if he was fortunali enough to stay within the perimeter of the tubing. Those tha didn't brought about enough concern from other participants causing the addition of safety shoulder harnesses which help keep the driver in a fairly rigid, upright and secure position.

On most new cars, the shoulder harness is standard equip ment while the roll bar is already being incorporated in severa automobiles. Dozens of other lafety innovations have appeared on the scene throughout the years, some common only to a certain type of automobile racing, such as the "outer spaceman" look firesuit that fuel dragster drivers wear in drag racing, and others appropo to all forms of auto racing, such as the scattershield in the advent of clutch-flywheel failure, Drivers Must Protect Selves WE HAVE ALWAYS believed in safety even safety above performance. You may have the fastesl'ear on the track, but if you don't protect yourself in the gest way possible with the equipment available today, your life isn't worth the exhaust coming out your headers. As the years go by, you will be seeing mere and more safely equipment and ideas being developed, Even when the rules don't call for it, take advantage whenever possible, It's your life make It worthwhile. Even for those of you who don't race, you've got to be thankful to the sport of aufo racing for what they have caused to happen in passenger car development.

There are a great many people who have survived serious automobile accidents due to safely equipment and new ideas in car design. It really has come a long, long way. Just ask Ralph Nader! First Time Winners Leaving Detroit Stadium after Eagles beat Lions, 12-0, in Thanksgiving Day game, for first win in 12 NFL games this year, Philadelphia coach Joe Kuharich and placement kicker Sam Baker (38) pause for interview. slill in the Coke stage," Kuharich said in his irst jovial post-game press conference of the year. "We won't be at the campagne stage for awhile yet." Kuharich allowed as how the win was a tremendous lift to his squad but added "this team is a fighting, determined, battling team that's just been unfortunate. "There never has been any morale problem on his club you can't point out any boy on this team who hasn't put out in practice or in a game." The game was played on a field which, despite the tarpaulins being removed only one-hall hour before game time, quickly turned into an ocean of mud and toward the end resembled a lake. The rain stopped with about a minute to go. "I've seen games where the football field was in as bad a hape," Kuharich said, "an 've played on quite a few.

"I remember once (when th 'hiladelphia coach' was with th hen Chicago Cardinals) whe ve played Detroit in Buffalo N.Y., and the game ended in tie. "The field was so bad the covered it with lime and sever, ilayers wound up with Mm turns," he recalled with a lilt augh. "That draft thing is beyon his," Kuharich responded to question concerning Souther California's great halfback, 0. Simpson, who probably will drafted by the pro football tear with the worst record.
