Austin American-Statesman. 1 I I I 0 it I I I May 29,. 1982 a i it 'Visiting Hours' mainly a celebration of violence A L.j it 1 LJ envst Review You've really always known how a good martial arts school should be! The instructors should be knowledgeable, patient, and generous. The classes should be well-organized and professionally conducted. Instructors should apply the most current concepts of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and motor control to assure students of quickly and safely attaining a high level of physical fitness, and the program should equally weight cultivation of health and attention to internal self-culture.

The self-defense aspects of the martial arts should be taught from the highest ethical viewpoint, stressing personal responsiblity and concern for others. People of all ages and all walks of life should benefit equally from the classes, and the only goal of the instructors should be to help each student develop his or her maximum potential. You've always known bow a good martial arts school should be! So have we! And we've been in Austin ten years, working hard to live up to your ideals. By PATRICK TAGGART American-Statesman Staff In "Visiting Hours," Lee Grant plays a bad television journalist being stalked by a less-than-competent deranged killer. Her producer boss, played by William Shatner, shows his lack of professionalism by letting her stay employed.

And a fever thermometer would confuse nurse Linda Purl. But the shortcomings of the participants positively pales compared to those of the perpetrators of "Visiting Hours." It is a swill most vile, stewed in gore and mean-spiritedness and seasoned with not a single warm or witty moment The screenplay by Brian Taggert (absolutely no relation) has television reporter and would-be pacifist Lee Grant become the prey of a drooling, sweating, knife-wielding psycho. This weirdo, played by Michael Ironside, specializes in a hatred of women born of his mother's penchant for settling arguments with his father by throwing hot grease in the man's face. FOE? ONE WEEK ONLY! all guaranteed programs, family memberships, special classes. The killer singles out Grant for her on-air championing of a woman who killed her battering husband.

When the psycho's attempt to kill Grant is only partially successful, he stalks her in the hospital. Purl gets wise to the fact that the same guy attacked both Grant and a frizzy-haired street dweller, and she becomes a target, too. There is nothing generically wrong with thrillers about deranged killers, but so many, and especially "Visiting Hours," are little more than celebrations of violence. There's no warmth here, nor any truly sympathetic characters. Worse, "Visiting Hours" isn't even inept enough to be funny accidentally.

Director Jean Claude Lord has just enough talent to execute a scene, but not enough imagination to lift it out of the ordinary. Hours, "rated for violence, at the Northcross and Aquarius.)
