Austin American-Statesman Saturday, November 13, 1982 Imaginative "Creeps how' is horribly fun 32 Review Macs, and the audience swallows up all its terrors with a shudder of delight Sophomoric stories are the cornerstone of "Creepshow," with nothing as elaborate or intricately detailed as King's "Shining" or "Carrie" efforts. King even steps in front of the camera to play a country bumpkin whose farm is visited by a crashing meteor. As the simpleton Jordy, King envisions vast wealth resulting from his find. "Ill take $200, and not a penny less," he tells a college professor. But before Jordy can collect from his discovery, a bizarre transformation takes place.

Mysterious foliage appears around everything that comes into contact with the rock, and ultimately begins to attach itself to the hapless Jordy. The moral, of course, is not to touch that which comes without a receipt Leslie Nielsen plays a diabolical video freak in another segment wreaking an unorthodox revenge on his two-timing wife and her lover. When he discovers he has been cuckold, he takes the only recourse by burying both of them neck deep on the beach and waiting for the tide to come in and assuage his bruised ego. Their escape proves to be Nielsen's undoing, but if a dynamic bit of acting, with Nielsen walking a dramatic tightrope between humor and horror. First-rate performances by Hal Hol-brook, Adrienne Barbeau and E.G.

Marshall put "Creepshow' head and shoulders over most of the slice-and-dice films Hollywood premieres on a weekly basis. The spooky visions assembled by King and Romero are designed to entertain, not induce convulsions, and that may be the highest form of praise to attribute to a film of this genre. By KEVIN PHINNEY American-Statesman Staff Stephen King's "Creepshow" is a most delicious oddity that rare occurrence of junk food film that goes down like a seven-course meal. Based on "Creepy" Comics, screenwriter Stephen King uses "Creeepshow" to pay cinematic homage to what must have been an early source of inspiration for his own errie brand of horror. The picture makes no pretense at suspense an endless parade of ghouls, monsters and murders wash across the screen, with the audience left to wonder not if certain characters will die, but how.

King's imagination runs wild for the duration. "Creepshow" comprises a series of macabre vignettes, much as the magazine that inspired it Director George Romero serves up disembodied figures like Big .1 Adrienne Barbeau meets a friend.
