He might as well have been talking about the film in which he is so compassionately portrayed.

This grainy little black-and-white movie is ostensibly a de-- tective mystery, but in fact it is an enlightening filmic discussion on what it is to be a Chinese-American in San "Francisco. One expects to see documentaries about such issues, but "Chan," which was written and directed on a shoestring by V5rVayne Wang, puts its themes in the ever- accessible mystery format, and with excellent results. Though the technical 'quality is poor and the print obviously well-traveled, "Chan Is Missing" is a film of good ideas and fine performances. action is centered on the disappearance of a never-seen Chan Hung, friend and business partner of Chinese-'--Americans Steve (Marc Hayashi) and Jo (Wood Moy). Their investigation takes them to friends, relatives, businessmen, lawyers, restaurateurs, all of whom shed a little light on Chan and, not incidentally, the effects both positive and negative of the cultural confluence of Chinatown.
