Possessed of a prodigious memory for events of the past, "Lass" often told how the people of Hancock lived in fear of their lives during a battle between Northern and Southern armies, which were entrenched on opposite hills on either side of the river with the town between. An enthusiastic fishpot fisherman, "Lass" years ago knew the best spots in the river and canal to find fish and in later years bemoaned the disappearance of fish from the Potomac.
