We treated the snake." THE BAR HERE also is the scene of the relating of miserable jokes. A graying state employee, again about 50 years old and again someone who doesn't want his name printed, and his friend in the three-piece suit, still another who wouldn't give his name, are responsible for many of them. There's no telling how long the jokes have been swapped around Lock Stock Barrel. The state employee says the bar opened about nine years ago, that he's been coming in ever since, and that back then it was about the only place on Anderson Lane to buy a drink. That being the case, the bar probably has been the home of silly yarns since the early '70s.

Decor The downstairs bar area, with couches put in next to walls, has the atmosphere of a living room and the look of the H.M.S. Pinafore. One expects Sinbad the Alcoholic to come bounding in at any moment There's an upstairs bar with a balcony and surrounding brass rail. The emphasis is on comfort, and the downstairs bar is padded "which is hard to find anymore," the state employee said. "Saves a lot of bruised elbows." FOOD: HERE'S THE best part.

From 5-8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays the bar provides free eats, and we're not talking your basic cheese and crackers, folks. On Wednesday nights they lay out a large roast beef and cut it up for small sandwiches made out of bread baked on the premises. When I was there Wednesday, the roast, which the guy carving it called a "steamship round," probably weighed 40-50 pounds. On Monday nights management puts out 20-30 pounds of free cold boiled shrimp with red sauce.

Tuesday is make-your-own taco night On Thursday it's fried cheeses. And on Fridays (and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. until closing), customers are given hot hors d'oeuvres chicken dru-mettes, egg rolls, meatballs and rumakis (chicken livers wrapped in bacon with water chestnuts). Customers also can buy food in the bar until 10 p.m. nachos a plate of diced prime rib 1.

"Just whatever little games go on among the folks," said Richard Metheny, one of the managers, who added later that his at-the-bar regulars have been telling their stories for so long that they can't remember if they're fact or bulL REGGAE REGGAE REGGAE with THE RAFT JUDUS STARR IRIB ANA PRESSURE TRINIDAD STEEL BAND 4pm $300 June 12 Free with ticket stub from B52's and U2 A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS Fine bicycles assembled with meticulous care with THE FIXX JUNE 23 WIMWMf ji RECREATIONAL VEHICLESN I faac ji iajfeaS at 5pm Centurion NISHiKg, BM1YATA Huge selection best prices on all bicycle accessories including: Gloves, Shoes, Jerseys Shorts Kirtland Eclipse Bicycle Touring Packs Specialized Tires Tubes SUMMER ACCESSORIES SALE: Turbo Trainer Reg. $179.75 $13995 Racer-Mate II Reg. $149.95 $1 0995 Pacer 2000 Reg.
