6 Austin American-StatesmanNeighbor Thursday, December 9, 1982 etz first-graders take trip to Natural Science Center IT- -JL JV School notebook led by seven individual victories from Chin, Kolesnik, Jon Luckstead and Steve Skelton. ft I 'i i Ortega Metz first-graders in Ms. Carter's and Ms. McShea's classes did not let the bad weather stop them from going on a field trip to the Natural Science Center. Their program was centered around birds and the tour provided various experiences for the children, such as the touch table of various rocks and fossils and petrified objects of animal origins.

The Discovery Room, the microscope table and the outdoor animal compound entertained the children. Metz students of the week are: Angelica Yanez, Rosalinda Perez, Anita Vela, Angilique Daniels, Rudy Reyna, Mike Salazar, Eric Schiess, Betty Wells, Ana Chavez, Alethia Davis, Eric Esquivel, Amy Arrellano, Edgar Saucedo, Rachel Suniga, Joshua Salazar, Eva Castillo, Elvia Beni-tez and Cindy Lohmann. The Metz The Best Club has 252 members for this week. Metz is very proud of the children in this club. They are truly good citizens.

Kit of books about weather and flight. It also came at a convenient time for third-grade teacher Kay Willams as she begins a pilot unit on weather this month. Gullett The magnet classes have been on the go. Dixie Barton's geology class went to Inner Space Caverns to further their study of area rock formations. The "Roughing It Easy" class, taught by Marilyn Foster, will use equipment made and skills learned during class when they camp out in the cabins at the Leander Rehabilitation Center this weekend.

They will cook their own food. Weather permitting, they will go paddle boating and horseback riding. Steve Eells and Karen Jones will also accompany the group. Rosedale The Austin Regional Day School Program for the Deaf presented a Christmas music program Dec. 1 at Rosedale Elementary.

Students came from Casis, Reilly, Wooten and Rosedale schools performed. The program was organized by Dellinda Henry, music therapist. "I love you" ornaments were made by hearing impaired students at the Austin State Hospital and were given to the children by Santa Claus. Santa also entertained the children with magic tricks. Refreshments were served by students from Pearce Juniqr High.

After a brief PTA meeting, there will be a concert featuring the band (Keith Jones, director), choir (Rhonda Cox, director) and orchestra (Judy DeWitt, director). Student directories will be for sale for $1 that evening. and occupational careers. Seniors will be transported by bus Tuesday to the University of Texas admissions office for the Central Texas College Fair. Attending with 40 students will be Dean Charles Gorin, counselor Mildred Rucker, school nurse Maria Tomassini and teachers Laruie Heffernan and Linda Harvey. Highland Park The Highland Park third grade has begun its annual study of the European Middle Ages. During this social studies unit, the children learn about the origins of the medieval world, feudalism and economic organization, guilds, towns, castles, knights, heraldry, the crusades and the gradual decline of the middle ages in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

They will learn about the Renaissance and what distinguishes the middle ages from the modern world. To complement this unit the children will do a variety of craft activities. They will make Batik banners and stained-glass panels. They will do calligraphy and tin work, make shields with coats-of-arms and devise medieval costumes and games. The unit will end in mid-January with a medieval fair.

The children will dress in costume and display their art work and writing. There will be games, refreshments and the music lab will entertain with medieval dances and music. Dinah Bristol Chenven Reagan The December PTA meeting and holiday program will be next Thursday, Dec. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

During the next week, students will bring home evaluation forms for parents to read and fill out. Please take the time to do this before the holidays so the faculty and staff may make plans on how to improve the program for the spring term at Ortega. Harris The next meeting of the Harris PTA will be Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. A nominating committee to gather names for a slate of officers for 1982-83 will be elected.

A program of Christmas music will be presented by the fifth-grade choir after the meeting. Congratulations to John McMue-len in Miss Rambo's sixth-grade class. He submitted the winning entry for the student directory cover contest. John's picture was printed on the cover of the directory and he was presented with a T-shirt with a replica of the picture on it. Winn Winning classrooms for the PTA membership contest were kindergarten, Mrs.

Quick; first grade, Mrs. Hatch; second grade (tie), Mrs. Springs and Mrs. Arnold; third grade (tie), Mrs. Hernandez and Mrs.

Purdy; and fourth grade, Mrs. Sanderson. Each class was given an ice cream party. Fourth-graders in the Gifted and Talented Language Arts Program went on a field trip to the Austin American-Statesman recently. Together with their teacher Lorra Sanderson, they toured the pressroom and interviewed a reporter.

Participating were Ellen Brown, Dane Car-ruthers, Nicole Chamberlain, Thahn Doung, Annette Frenzel, Cynthia Hardin, Nicole Heard, Joy Hedrick, Shavon Hygh, Katrina Irvin, Jimmy Maas, Michelle Martinez, Pamela Murphy, Kim Nauyen, Iliana Rodriguez, Lakeisha Smith and Kevin McConnell. McCallum The St. Louis varsity team captured the flag football championship of the Austin Inter-Parochial League. The Cougars had an 8-0 season record. Third row Hope Lutheran The two Blue Bird Clubs at Hope Lutheran School, sponsored by Nancy Barton and Bobbi Haidusek, will participate in "Wildlife Christmas," a community service project where trees in neighborhood parks are decorated with seeds, nuts, fruits, berries, etc. to help animals through long, cold winter months. Dec. 13 through 18 is the week for Wildlife Christmas.

Haidusek's club will be decorating trees on the grounds Bartholomew Park. Barton's group will decorate trees at Dottie Jordan Park. Club members will earn emblems for their participation. The two Blue Bird Clubs will join together to sing Christmas carols to the residents at Gaston Place apartments Monday, Dec. 13 at 3 p.m.

Barton's club will bring toys to their next regular club meeting to be donated to Operation Blue Santa. These toys will be presented to the program as the club's effort to be involved in the community service projects during the holiday season. Lamar 1 The Lamar Junior High School holiday program will be Tuesday, Dec. The Austin High Madrigal Singers, Chorale and Girls choir will present a Christmas concert Tuesday, Dec. 14 at St.

Martin's Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. Thomas Prentice was recognized as one of five journalism teachers across the country for his outstanding contributions to scholastic journalism. Prentice was presented a certificate by the Dow Jones Newspaper Funds which noted his outstanding work in high school journalism education. Students at Austin High will compete this year for a $500 college scholarship for the best journalism exercise written under deadline.

Prentice has taught journalism five of his seven years of teaching at Austin High. He also advises the school newspaper and yearbook. University of Texas mathematics professor Lawrence Williams spoke on Number Theory at Mu Alpha The-ta's initiation ceremony last month. Membership certificates were awarded to all new national members. The Austin Mavericks, a new math team representing both Austin High and Kirby Hall School, took an unofficial first place at Lamar University Mathematics Day Oct.

29, led by an individual first place from Andrew Chin, a second honorable mention from Alex Kolesnik and a first place team award from William Kelley. The Mavericks also took seventh place at San Antonio Kennedy High School's math tournament Nov. 20, The Reagan student council is conducting a bottle drive. They will call on neighbors to collect empty, returnable bottles to raise funds for student council special projects. Look for them Sunday beginning at 2 p.m.

The Reagan band and orchestra will be joined by the Dobie Junior High bands for a Christmas concert in the Reagan cafeteria at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16. The choir will present a concert of Christmas music Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ, 11908 N.

Lamar Blvd. Vocational counselor Ruth Hodge is the coordinator of a computer program designed to help students select a career appropriate for their individual aptitudes, interests and skills. The program is called COIN (Coordinated Occupational Information Network). To utilize the program, students fill out personal profile sheets listing their interests etc. Based on that information, the program provides specific data concerning the selection of suitable colleges and universities or military Being selected as a member of the Texas All-State Orchestra is the highest honor a high school musician can achieve.

This year McCallum had more students chosen as all-state orchestra members than any other Austin high school. Sims Children at Sims Elementary had a double treat recently as they were visited by both weatherman Tim Ross and Reading is Fundamental on the same day. Howard Payton was presented with the district award of merit by the Thunder-bird District Council of the Capitol Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, for his outstanding leadership in the field of scouting and other youth activities.

Pay-ton is the scoutmaster of Troop 5 at the First United Methodist Church. Payton's three sons, Stephen, Russell and Richard, received their Eagle Scout awards during the time their father was assistant scoutmaster of Troop 5.
