But It gets wearing, as would playing all their records back-to-back, loudly. A little Devo goes a long way, and, for all the visual stimulation and tomfoolery, I've had my dose for some time to come. In fact if somebody would get a Chuck Statler Film Festival together, I'd pass on Devo's next show completely. The New Austin Coliseum (that's what it said on the for all Its quonset hut looks, makes a fine rock hall. I had flashbacks of Winterland and Armadillo World Headquarters, and, while it's not quite up to those standards, I'd far rather see a show especially a loud one there than in Palmer Auditorium, which must have the worst acoustics of any performance space in town.

If staging as complex as Devo's can be done there, anything can be. Promoters, take note. By ED WARD American-Statesman Staff Without Devo, who played at the new Austin Coliseum on Saturday night, there probably would never have been the huge wave of British art-rockers (Ultra-vox, Human League, Duran Duran, De-peche Mode) who are so popular today with the cognoscenti who wouldn't be caught dead at a Devo show. It was Devo's Jerky rhythms, heavily synthesized sound, and art-school overlay that made people realize that you could do more with synthesizers than ponderous groups like Tangerine Dream did. And, in their collaborations with filmvideo maker Chuck Statler, they paved the way for the non-performance video shorts that are revolutionizing the music biz.

They start their shows with a six-pack of Statlers these days, mixing old favorites like "The Truth about De-Evolution" and "Satisfaction" with great new flicks like "Love Without Anger" and "Beautiful World." The newer films show that Statler Is Just beginning to warm up, and they make for compelling viewing. After that comes the live part of the show, with a classical-style facade framing three treadmills, backed with projection screens for slides and light effects. (You may have seen this on "Fridays" recently). As the band plays song after song from its new "New Traditionalists" album, lights and slides assault the audience. It's an amazing set Unfortunately, there Is the music to consider, and that is where there's trou Everybods talking Talking about Ellie Rucker's consumer advice-column daily in the LifeStyle pages of Austin Amorican-cSlatesmatt 1 Sfc HITACHI It COLOR TV 10 ft warttnry 2 ptc tubs rt ll i'i: si pannanan A-AAUGER i THE PLUMBERS YOU CAN TRUST 2 $5.00 DISCOUNT 477-3974 DananauG Jf-if fit NOW SERVING MIXED DRINKS HAPPY HOUR 3-7 p.m.
