In a special statement, Richard Gordon, director of disaster services for the Western area of the Red Cross, said that "for almost a week Red Cross workers have been on the scene assisting evacuees in many communities threatened earlier by rain- swollen rivers and creeks." Gordon added, "By the time the floods had reached their peak, some 7,400 refugees were being housed and fed in 58 shelters, and additional disaster 'teams' from other parts of the stale had been rushed to the stricken areas to assist in the relief operation."
