"Thief" doesn't it winds up in a blind alley with nowhere to turn except toward violence, complete with slow-motion photography and gory entry and exit bullet wounds.

Need an ending? When in doubt, kill the characters. Tueaday Weld, who in the last couple of years has made a tremendous comeback to the movie mainstream, is excellent as Jessie. Caan is playing his traditional persona rough, tough but sensitive but he is always effective. Hometown favorite Willie Nelson, last seen as the star of "Honeysuckle Rose," appears briefly in two scenes, although in the second one he has no audible dialogue. He plays the part of Frank's dying convict friend extremely well, combining wistfulness in the voice with his tradition twinkle in the eye.

The performance is further proof, if needed, that under the proper direction Nelson has a legitimate place in this new business of his. By PATRICK TAGGART American Statesman Staff "Thief" is a kind of "Apocalypse Now" of jewel-heist films. Big and ambitious, it boasts good performances by respectable actors, a story that goes off on effective tangents for no purpose other than to flesh out an aspect of a character or show off some particularly good writing and acting. And like "Apocalypse," it has a resolution that sends the whole enterprise whirling down the toilet and leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of the viewer. Michael Mann, who wrote and directed the film based on a novel by Frank Ho-himer, explores in "Thief" the dangerous but rather elegant world of the world-class thief the circles in which he travels, the fruits and risks of his labor.

His protagonist is an ex-convict named Prank (James Caan). Frank uses a used business as a cover for his extremely lucrative career as a high-stakes bandit. Frank is not out for just any old necklace or pocketbook; his jobs involve breaking into vaults with torches and leaving with six-figure bundles. Is at his best in his depictions of 1iis characters. They are credible, multidimensional people.

His profiles of Frank, the thief, and his wife Jessie, (Tuesday Weld) are full and fair, as jack Mccreary on the issues. Five Reasons to Vote for Jack: richly fleshed out as you're likely to find. When Frank and Jessie battle their guts out against an unhearing bureacracy in an attempt to adopt a child, we practically cheer for Frank's subsequent criminal exploits to be successful. And there's no question where our sympathies lie when mobsters kill one of his partners (played by Jim Belushi, John's younger brother) and threaten the lives of his wife and child his family. v.

His plan manages growth by making the hard decisions and sticking to them. Utilities: Jack will lower utility bills. He will return the $19 million dollar profit from the sale of surplus power to those of us who pay the bills. Elderly: Jack will increase the senior citizen property tax exemption to compensate for the increase in valuation from 75 to 100.

Transportation: Jack will work to revamp our outdated road system, including completion of MoPac. He will also work to make Austin's bus system more efficient and less costly. Budget: We must end the skyrocketing increases in city spending. Jack's plan will allow the city budgetto increase only at the rate of population growth plus inflation. i mi mm wm a iui nm sjim 'I iv j( 11 fii 1 rm.

NEW REFLECTIONS Salon is happy to present to Austin a new electronic method of removing unwanted hair painlessly and safely with a machine called the ELECTROH. It uses radio frequency to dehydrate the hair root but without needles. The skin is never touched.

An electronic tweezer grasps the hair and conducts radio frequency to the hair bulb, cauterizing the root-structure painlessly. This seals off the blood supply that allows the hair to grow. In just a few seconds the hair slides out painlessly. Because nothing touches the skin, there is no danger of scarring or infection. Makeup can even be applied immediately after treatment.
