Sensitive, intelligent and gorgeously -cbs By PATRICK TAGGART American-Statesman Staff How sad to waste such perfectly decent words as mindless on "Any Which Way You Can," Clint Eastwood's new monkeyshlne.

For in "Nine to Five" we have a film that is to the brain what black holes are to outer space. It positively gobbles up everything in sight. The new film teams Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda with singer Dolly Parton (her first movie appearance), in a comedy about three secretaries who plot revenge on their boss. The boss, Mr. Hart (Dabney Coleman) is the very definition of the male chauvinist pig.

To him secretaries are "dumb broads," good only for fetching coffee and buying gifts for the wife. Or should we say, little woman. Colin Hlggins, In the film he directed and wrote with Patricia Resnick, begins his story much better than he ends it. Everything is fine through the expository stuff; Tomlin is suave and funny as the savvy secretary who introduces Fonda to her new job at Consolidated Companies. When Parton discovers that Hart has been suggesting to buddies that he Is having an affair with her, she hits the roof.

The three ladies get drunk and fantasize about how they're going to get even. These fantasies are cartoon stuff, to be sure, but intelligent and amusing. Fantasy takes an accidental turn toward reality the next day when Tomlin accidently poors rat poison into Hart's coffee. He is taken to the hospital, but for a bump on the head, not poison. The women, convinced they have been found out, race to the hospital.

It is in their mad dash in Tomlin's Buick that the whole movie takes a wrong turn. "Nine to Five" very quickly dissolves from clever, upbeat social satire to a series of overblown, worn out mistaken-identity gags, implausible abductions and other time-killers. It sputters back to life at the end, when board chairman Sterling Hayden discovers that while Hart has been away, things have gone swimmingly at the office. Hart's reward Is a delight to almost, but not quite, everybody. Perhaps Hlggins elected to shift gears in order to avoid turning comedy into sermonette, but he "A BEAUTIFULLY in CONCblVEU AND ACTED nnrfroit nf thp orfict ic Friday.

wound up with something almost as bad. There's nothing quite as disappointing as a film that begins with such promise especially considering the talent of the stars and concludes so weakly. If anything remains consistent, it is the acting of everyone involved, from Coleman's football-as-metaphor-for-business boss to Parton's frilly but tough office organizer. But at some point in its eight hours (and the movie often seems that long) "Nine to Five" could have used an efficiency expert. to Five," rated PG for mild profanity; at the Fox Triplex and Lakehills.)
