THE ARGLS Page 14 Newark. California Saturday. May 4, 1968 Fluffy And Friend "Remember the Mane" is Tony Randall's motto as he shares lunch with his co-star. Fluffy. Randall plays a college biochemist conduct- ing studies on the remarkably gentle lion in "Fluffy" on NBC's "Saturday Night at the Movies" on May 18.

Irving Berlin Tribute "A patriotic song is an emotion, and you must not embarrass an audience with it or they'll hate your guts." The speaker is Irving Berlin, an authority on the subject who has probably composed more stirring musical salutes to his country than any other man. Fittingly, he will be saluted himself by his friend of many years, Ed Sullivan, on a 90-minute edition of "The Ed Sullivan Show" tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. on The occasion is the composer's 80th birthday six days later, and the stars on the all- Berlin song tribute include Bing Crosby, Peter Gennaro, Harrj James and his orchestra, Ethel Merman, Morecambe and Wise Diana Ross and the Supremes Fred Waring and his glee club and special guest Robert Goulet. IRVING BERLIN is the man responsible for the song which has been called our second na 11 a 1 anthem, "God Bless America." It was written in 1918 as the finale of "Yip, Yip Yaphank," an all-soldier revue with words and music by Sgt Irving Berlin that was never used. It was sung in public foi the first time in 1938, when Kate Smith introduced it on her radi program.

The extent of its meanini around the world was demon strated when Gen. Dougla MacArthur marched into Manila after its recapture during Work War II. He was greeted by thou sands of Filipino children sing ing the song. The composer's devotion the United States was expressei not only in the words and musi but in a singularly generou gesture: He donated all of th royalties, almost $400,000, to th Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts America. Appropriately, Berli himself will sing "God Bles America" on the Sullivan trib ute, backed by a hundred Bo Scouts and Girl Scouts.

IT WAS during World War I that Berlin's patriotism, ex pressed in music, was especial sale of defense bonds, "Arms Bonds Today" to promote the sale defense bonds, "Arms fo for the Love of America" boost production in defensi plants, "Angels of Mercy" foi the American Red Cross and "There Are No Wings in a Fox hole," a tribute to the infantrj written while he was entertain ing troops in the European war theater. i crowning achievemen was his second all-soldier revue "This Is the Army," which net ted approximately $10,000,000 for the Army Emergency Relie Fund. Compsed, produced anc staged by Berlin, "This Is the Army'' opened in New York at the Broadway Theater on July 4, 1942, played most of the ma jor cities in the United States and then toured American military bases in Europe, Africa, Australia and the South Pacific. BERLIN himself performed and stayed with the show for three and a half years. Dressed in his World War I uniform, he sang "Oh, How I hate to Get Up in the Morning" (reprised from "Yip, Yip which he will also sing on the Sullivan salute.

Peter Gennaro will dance to another hit from that musical, "This Is the Army, Mr Jones." Fire Watch Strother Martin hugs his fearful daughter, played by Pam Ferdin, as they watch flames destroy their chicken coop in "The Four Dollar Lawsuit" on Death Valley Days Friday, May 10. Martin plays an uneducated chicken farmer who overcomes humiliation and sues for a $4 insurance benefit. The story is based on a case which actually occurred. South I 3 4 West North Pass 2 Pass 4 0 East P. Doubk BRIDGE QUIZ In the Spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of slam. And he has a darn sight better chance of making good in that department if he understands the gentle art of cue-bidding.

When a trump suit has been agreed and the team is committed to game, any bid in a plain suit is a cue-bid. It indicates first-round (sometimes second-round) control. And it is a definite try for slam. Some cue-bids are inferentially stronger than others. A cue-bid that consumes bidding space may indicate more strength than a cheap cue-bid that doesn't raise the bidding level.

And even a failure to make a cue-bid can be a significant clue to keep you out of slam. What do you bid on each of the following hands' ANSWERS TO BRIDGE QUIZ 1. Four diamonds. North's bid of four clubs is a cue-bid. Although South's hand is not strong enough to bid slam straight off.

he is safe to cue-bid four diamonds since he has already limited his hand and North cannot reasonably expect more than South actually holds. 2. Four spades, a fine point arises here. North's cue-bid of four hearts not only promises the ace of that suit it also denies the club ace which North could have shown more cheaply. As there may be two club losers, it will on the whole be inadvisable for South to cue-bid the diamond ace.

3. Four hearts. This is a very borderline case. If South held the diamond ace he could cue-bid that card without raising the bidding level. On the actual hand, a cue-bid of four spades would carry the bidding beyond game and would indicate a stronger hand.

4. Redouble. This highpower maneuver is recommended only with a reliable partner. When a cue-bid is doubted, a redouble by next hand indicates second-round control (king or singleton). East has made a grave tactical error in doubling North's cue-bid of four diamonds, for after the redouble you can still cue-bid five clubs on the next round.

In effect East has enabled you to gain a whole round of bidding South holds: AJ 104 104 0 6 A 5 2 Television Timetable Ch. 2--KTVU OalcUnd Ch. 3--KCRA-TV Sacramtnto A A MAY 4 MORNING 6:30 Agricultural Show 6:25 C0Q Hem 6:30 OQ Acrou the Fence OS Sunrise Semester Ritionil Numbers (BO Voice ol Agriculture 7:00 BO Agriculture USA O9 Top Cat BO The Lone Ringer DO Dick Tracy Captain Delta 7:15 TV Credit Course 7:25 (0 USDA Soil Conservation 7:30 BOO Coal McCool OQ The Road Runner OO Brother Buu OS Farm Forum ffi Sunrise Semester CBO Eiistence 7:45 (B Linus the Lionhearted 8:00 QO9 Super Sii BQCQCBO Capt.
