Euwe had said earlier that cancellation would be "a great loss in many respects. The rules require that a postponement for illness must be certified by a doctor that the host organization chooses. Typical of confusion surrounding preparations for the match, the federation doctor, Ulfar Thor-darson, left for his country house early Sunday morning.

The Russian side reluctantly accepted Euwe's decision. Spassky was asked what he i prrv riM hr. yk ,11111 1 Ill III lift If W. i Northwest Airline Strike Causes Major Layoffs MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (AP) Northwest Airlines has laid off a "very substantial majority" of its 8,500 nonstriking employes as the result of a walkout by pilots, a Northwest spokesman said Sunday.

Roy Erickson, vice president for public relations, said he did not know the exact number of workers laid off. He said some mechanics, clerks, accounting personnel and equipment service workers still are on the job. The strike by 1.600 Northwest pilots entered its third day Sunday with both sides still deadlocked on the resumption of negotiations. Northwest has said it will return to contract talks if the pilots first resume work, but spokesmen for the Air Line Pilots Association have refused to accept any preconditions to talks. The ultimatum, announced by Dr. Max Euwe, president of the International Chess Federation, meant a two-day postponement of Fischer's encounter with world champion Boris Spassky of Russia.

The match was to have started at 5 p.m. Sun-day-1 p.m. EDT. Euwe said a friend of the American challenger was leaving for New York "to talk with him." "He will try to convince him to appear. I can't say who it is," he added.

Fischer refused to play the match after officials of the Icelandic Chess Federation balked at his last-minute demands for more money, in addition to a record purse already contracted for. Fischer and Spassky were to have a guaranteed share of $125,000 the winner taking five-eighths plus 30 per cent each of income from the sale of film and television rights. This alone was 10 times greater than any prize money ever paid to a chess player. Fischer wants an additional 30 per cent of the gate receipts. Faced with a decision of disqualifying Fischer immediately or granting reprieve, Euwe chose the path he said would best protect the host organization.

Fischer's representatives here had asked for a postponement on the basis of illness. They said the American was suffering fatigue. 46' $J97 Rep. Boggs' Daughter in Politics Gala Paper Napkins 160 Count Mirror Aluminum Foil 12" 1 25' roll 24 BBQ Grill With Folding TripoH Legs. Reg.

(AP) A daughter of long-time Democratic leader Rep. Hale Boggs of Louisiana is testing the political waters herself. Barbara Boggs Sigmund, 33, is campaigning actively these days for a seat on the Princeton Borough Council. Her father thought it was a great idea "He just said with a lot of enthusiasm" and her husband Paul, a professor of politics and a China scholar at Princeton University, resigned himself to the fact. "He thought it was something I should do eventually," she said, three-way primary June 6.

She and the second-place primary finisher are running against two Republicans for the two seats at stake in November. Mrs. Sigmund, who agrees with her father's characterization of her as a "liberal Democrat," says she'll back South Dakota Sen. George McGovern for the Democratic presidential nomination. For her own fight, she's looking forward for some campaign help from her parents.

"They're the best campaigners I know," she said. Read The Want Ads "though he was hoping it would still be eventual." Of her three children, the most enthusiastic was Paul, 7, she said. "He turned out to be his grandfather's grandson," Mrs. Sigmund said. 'What would you think of having a merry-go-round in Harrison Street he asked me.

"He thought it over and then decided he'd make the system work to his advantage. Mrs. Sigmund is no stranger to politics. Boggs, now the assistant majority leader of the House of Representatives, first went to Congress when she was 15 months old. Her ancestors on her mother's side include the first governor of Louisiana and her brother Tom made an unsuccessful bid for a congressional seat from Maryland in 1970.

Mrs. Sigmund says the problems of affluent Princeton, a university town of 12,000, are similar to those of other growing towns. "We have traffic problems, drug problems. I feel my own particular duties would be like those of an ombudswoman, a catalyst in bringing different groups together to help solve problems. Running as a Democrat, Mrs.
