APRIL 24 GORDON MacRAE After a 10-year separation, the two women meet again and fill each other in on the details of their lives. Suzanne is still single, but has worked her way up to operatmg-a-family planning center. Pauline has changed her name to Apple, and spends most of her time as a street singer, performing feminist songs.

They vow never to lose contact with each other again, and we see the continuance of their friendship played off a series of romances with other men and assorted life crises. The movie makes many strongly feminist statements and at times threatens to become didactic. But on the whole, it's a gentle, moving story which should please a great many people. The fact that Dobie Screen-is now NOW SHOWING! SHOWf OWN Dl SOUTHSIDE Dl HOWARD (Taylor) (Pass list suspended Check theatre lor show times) Film Recording Star In a Fabulous Musical Evening You'll Never Forget By PAUL BEUTEL American Statesman Staff You might say that Agnes Varda's "One Sings, the Other Doesn't" can be viewed as a French version of feminist movement in films that has been represented in Hollywood by "The Turning Point," "Julia" and "An Unmarried Woman." Moreover, it's not an "artsy" foreign film you don't have to be schooled in auterism or Freud to get the full impact of what Varda is going after. The title refers to Pauline and Suzanne, two women whose close kinship in their youth creates a special bond of understanding that comforts them through the trying moments of their lives, even though at times they may be a thousand miles apart.

By having her characters lead radically different lifestyles, Varda emphasizes the special friendship and nonsexual love that she says only women can feel for each other because of the universal feelings and experiences of worn anhood. At the outset, Suzanne is a young, unwed mother of two, who is seeking an abortion so that her already difficult life with her artist boyfriend will not be complicated further. Her friend Pauline, still in high school and a would-be singer, lies to her parents about needing money for a choir trip so that Suzanne can obtain the abortion.
