FIGHTING THE DEMON IN 'THE HERETIC' From left, Max Von Sydow, Linda Blair, Louise Eetcher eretic9 a sorry VAUGHN and the Dear Dr. Thosteson: Will you write a column about adhesions? I would be interested in knowing why and how they grow and if they can be detected or prevented. I had these terrible stomach cramps. X-rays showed bowel obstruction. This was caused by adhesions growing around the small Intestine.

I was told they were caused by surgery I had nine years ago. That was when I had a ruptured appendix and almost died. Will I have to go through this again in another 9 years? Mn.J,C. Adhesions are fibrous scars which result from injury to tissue. They can result from surgery, from inflammation, from ruptured appendix, even from tuberculosis.

Some people may be born with little bands of scar tissue in the bowels, causing them to kink and cause obstruction. With your history of appendix problems and surgery you were a prime candidate for adhesion formation. Some persons form them more easily than others. It's difficult to prevent adhesions in those who are subject to them, and you can never predict with certainty whether they will form from any tissue injury. The trend toward getting patients up and around as soon after surgery as possible may have lessened the adhesion problem in recent years.

Also, powdering the surgical area with a steroid preparation is done commonly today to minimize adhesions. Surgery can be done to free adhesions that cause obstruction, as in your case. But if you are an adhesion former, new ones might occur from that procedure. THUNDERBIRDS n-fUNDER quel to 'Exorcist9 314Eosr6thSt. Maiittie HOW TO DINE review izzle tut yoiit MfMay.

Chopped Stockade Steak! ROYALLY g32 We start with chopped Sirloin. By PATRICK TAGGART Amusements Editor No doubt about it, "Exorcist II The Heretic" is about as lousy a movie as is likely to be found among today's big budget films. Yes, it is with no small amount ol sorrow that we report this fol-iow-up to William Friedkin's 1972 shocker is hardly in the same league. With so many years between the two "Exorcists," those of us who liked the first were virtually salivating for more of that camp horror. Little girls talking like whisky-voiced old ladies, dishes flying across the room, profanity and self mutilation what could possibly be more fun? If you found that a little strong, there will be little comfort in the new "Exorcist," directed by the surprisingly inept John Boorman.

Boorman, who flashed so brightly in the pan with 1972's "Deliverance," just doesn't know a thing about making a horror movie. He is a master with a camera, delighting in color experiments and camera movement. But at telling he's a lightweight, and it's our loss. wit yur c'ioice rfv" J4K. and Stockade Toast.

A About 10 minutes into a Friday showing audiences members let loose with catcalls and bronx cheers. That was when Father Lamont (Richard Burton) and a psychiatrist (Louise Fletcher) sat down for a quick session of "synchronized hypnosis." You know about synchronized hypnosis, of course. That's when you, uh, get hypnotized with somebody else and see what's in his mind. It just goes from bad to worse. We see flashbacks of Father Mer-rin (Max von Sydow) in his youth, and Regan (Linda Blair) in her head-turning days.

Boorman gives us some new thrills however, and they are definitely attention-getting. One of his best tricks is giving the audience the point of view of a locust in flight. The locust is the earthly representative of the Pazuzu, evil spirit of the air. $2.28 value for only Hurwitz- Maceiras Miss Joyce Maceiras of San Antonio, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

He said the same bird returns to sing each day, and his song brings back such painful memories that he feels he must either destroy that bird or go mad. Perhaps we are neighbors. A mockingbird has been singing in my area, too. My husband who died last year, loved the song of that bird, but it neither pains nor depresses me to Jiear it. Instead it gives me a feeling of inner peace, comfort and joy as though God were telling me that my "dear one is still nearby.

He mentioned that his wife had recorded the bird's song. If he will play the recording back to the bird while it's singing, the bird will think it is another male intruding in his territory, and after a few unsuccessful attempts to locate his competition, he will leave and never return. -TRIED IT IN TEXAS DEAR ABBY: Please tell DESPERATE that the pain he feels is within himself, not from the bird, and killing the bird or chasing it away will not ease that pain. The mockingbird's song could help relieve his pain if he would only view it differently. The song of the mockingbird is a gift that his dear departed wife has left him, since she still lives in his heart.

He should enjoy the memory of how much his wife loved that early morning music while the rest of the world was quiet. A. W. M. mm Sill 477-8809 AIRPORT at MANOR RD.
