Office opposite Banner Corner, Chapman, Kansas. A CONGRESSMAN'S LIFE. A. Cftraar Which General Thing, la Decidedly Afreeitble. It is an error to tuppose that law makers have nothing lnorj to do than to attend the ordinary sexsions of the Sera'o or House, and draw their pay.

Some of them are modds of industry going to the Capitol early in the noting wiuuuimjo iuwung lor an hour or two dartinS off to an executive department fpr informaliun, taking part in the debates of the respective Houses, writing letters to constituents, and transacting infinite odds and ends of business untH dusk. And when they go home in the evening, they are not always allowed to rest. They are bothered by dissatisfied constituents; they are besieged br strangers and friends, one wanting this done, another lUdU IUIIU DU1IIVIUIUX OHIO) j.UUV wearied and exhausted, they sink intc; that a third something else, a restless sleep, and dream hideous vis ions of the coming day, Yet there is another side to the pict ure. They each receive five thousand dollars a rear and perquisites, to sav nothing of the honor of writing and S. afer their names; they are "distinguished guests" wherever they go; they are invited to all levees and receptions, to all festivals and amusements; (hey are banqueted br the President and entertained by Cabinet1 Ministers; and they are welcome to every species of domest and foreign hospitality, from a charity-bill to a german at tbe legation, where tbey may move solemnly through the figures ol the stately minuet, or dance to the livelier music of a cotillion and Virginia reel.

Altogether, their careers are decidedly agreeable, and the averagj Congressman would s.rvo his country for life, and "nominate his bones' to fill the vacancy occasioned by death. The bright little so i of. a Senator evidently thought the Senate was an hereditary ins itution: for, wben asked what he intended to be on reach-y insf manhood, he mournfully anhwered; "Well, I'd like to be a hick-driver. but I s'po I'll have to be a Senator!" Church on the evening of Washington's Birthday, under the auspices of t'ie Yovng Ladies Aid Society, was a grand success in every way. 1 lie proceeds lieing nearly fifty dollars: This pays their subscrip tion to the parsonage fund of thirty dol lars and leaves a nice little surplus for other purposes. The young ladies com posing this society, and who have on former occasions, as well as at this time, materially aided in every good work undertaken for the church, are Misses Carrie 1 hisler, Eliza and Fanny Baker, Mabel Roe. Mary Hewitt, Utie White- hair, Mary Hubbard and Adele Roudiez.

Our people can well be proud of such a society of young ladies. We believe few places of the size of Chapman can produce as exemplary ones, as those above imed. We believe it to be their sincere purpose to make those around them happy and to raise the standard of the society in which they move. Following is the program for the Chapman literary March Bee. There is no occasion for gripping the purse strings. Let them loose and the dollars will return brighter than ever. There are no hard times in this country, and but little cause for complaint.
