A -r Rollins is terrific as the slimy Otis, and Cassidy is heartbreaking as the distraught but determined mother. In fact, there is little fault to be found with anyone in the cast. But the story is basically run-of-the-mill exploitation children being used and abused while guilt-stricken parents wring their hands and wish they'd done a better job at home. If you want to see a truly implausible ending, be sure and tune in for this one. There are a million stories in the naked city, and this one ranks among the most incredible at the conclusion.

a a Jack Klugman's new sitcom You which had a special sneak preview Thursday night in place of Family Ties, settles into its regular time slot tonight (at 7 on KTVV-TV, Channel 36 Cable 4). The pilot episode was pretty dreadful, and if the scenes from tonight's episode are any indication, the show is not going to be the tasteful, intelligent comedy Klugman said he Intended it to be. In the pilot, Klugman spent most of the half-hour shouting at his dim-witted son. played by General Hospitals heart-throb John Stamos. In Klugman's defense, Stamos' character is so relentlessly stupid he probably needs to be shouted at just to get his attention.

In Thursday night's episode, the son brought home a punk girl friend who was 'Children' Missing children and runaways1 are among the most popular sub-' jects for television movies, second only perhaps to prostitution, which has long been a favorite topic for network producers. The fascination, with ladies of the evening is long standing and shows no signs of diminishing. When a subject is dramatized as frequently as that of runaway children, it takes a special story, special treatment and special production values to lift it above the mundane crowd. ABC's The Children of Times Square (at 8 tonight, KVUE-TV, Channel 24 Cable 3) has the seedy, gritty look of reality and some excellent performances, but the plot is simplistic. To make matters worse, the storyline Is telegraphed from scene to scene, leaving little to the imagination and even less to hold our interest.

Times Square, for those of us non-New Yorkers, is a flashy, well-lit magnet for runaways, drawing an estimated 12,000 youngsters every year. According to the avuncular police officer Lt. Devlin (Jason Bernard) whose job it is to impart information in the movie, most of the runaways go home after a few days. But there are sad exceptions. "If they don't go home, and we haven't found them in a week, they're lost," Devlin says.

"Lost" in this context does not mean unable to find their way home but lost in terms of innocence and perhaps even life. Many runaways, we are told, wind up as drug dealers, prostitutes and petty street criminals. Some do not survive the hard life on the streets. Howard Rollins has the showcase role as Otis, a modern-day, urban Fagin. He's a hardened cocaine dealer who commands an army of young runaways called the Leopards.

In exchange for a percentage of the take, a place to sleep and a few morsels of food, the boys hit the. streets each day with a small supply of cocaine. They return with bags of money for Otis. "We're in the business of giving the suckers what they want," Otis tells his recruits. "And right now what they want is cocaine." As usual, an unhappy home life triggers the crisis that turns a good boy bad.

Elizabeth Bennett, who also plays the housekeeper in the English version of the series called Home to Roost, is the only bright spot in the show, but her participation in the pilot was minimal. The tone of You like the worst days of Norman Lear's AH in the Family, when the decibel level and the insult level were so high the show was more annoying than amusing.

Klugman's high-pitched intensity is well-suited to this kind of environment. His shrieking on Quincy got tiresome after the first season. Not since The Odd Couple has Klugman found a character who was pleasant enough to wear well over the years. a a a Farmers have a well-deserved reputation for hard work and sensible, no-nonsense lifestyles. So it should come as no surprise that 64 percent of them watch only an hour of television a day, far below the national viewing average of seven hours a day.

This information comes from a survey conducted by Successful Farming, which polled 1,150 farmers randomly selected from the magazine's 590,000 subscribers. The magazine's readers are primarily the high-income farm families who produce 85 percent of America's cash farm income. Also according to the survey, two-thirds of the respondents said they did not think TV programs were getting better. One dubbed today's TV "95 percent trash." Several of them said they were too busy or too tired to watch any television at all. Considering the long hours most farmers put in, this is hardly a shocking piece of information.

The average farmer isn't interested in Dynasty or Miami Vice, but 77 percent of those polled said they watch the evening newscasts. But unlike the national majority of between 65 percent and 70 percent, 49 percent of the farmers said they disagreed with the idea that TV newscasters are always believable. Farmers, it seems, are less inclined to believe every thing they see and hear on television than their city and town-dwelling brethren. ens' (Donan Harewood) high-school track coach, Charley Biiey (George recai's the Olympic champion success at Ohio State Unrversity and popularity at the 1936 Games Berlin With Debbi Morgan, Greg Morns (Part 1 of 2) 1Z Hart to Hart The Harts investigate the dog-attack cteatn of a perfum entrepreneur.
