Back In February, KTBC-TV Channel 7 (Cable 2) made headlines by deposing Channel 24's No. 1 newscast with a surprise victory at 10 p.m. and a tie with Channel 24 at 6. It was the first time since 1981 that Channel 7 had been able to regain its status as the local news leader. At the time, Channel 24's news director Russ Stockton and executive producer Bob Buckalew questioned the accuracy of the survey, while Tim Gardner, Channel 7's news director, said he thought the station's "hard work has finally paid off." In light of the recently released Arbitron survey for May, however, the February survey looks more like a statistical fluke than a sudden shift in viewing patterns.

"We wish we were No. 1, but we're not," said Gardner. "We've been improving steadily. We're up at 5 and 6 from last year. At 10 we didn't get helped out any by CBS's prime-time lead-in.

I still think we're growing and getting better." As for why Channel 7 lept to No. 1 in February only to be shot down again in May, Gardner said he didn't know how to explain it. "I really couldn't say what happened," he said. "But I'm not that worried about it, frankly.
