Please limit the gift item to a $1. The origin of the Christmas tree has long been obscured in the mists of time, but the popularity of the evergreen coniferous tree during the Christmas season continues to grow steadily year by year.

There are many stories concerning the origin of the Christmas tree. The Scandinavians, according to the National Automobile Club, worshipped trees in pagan times and the legend goes that when they later became Christians they incorporated the fir tree in their religious customs. The ancient Romans exchanged evergreen boughs on the first of January as a token of good luck. Later, the English adopted the fir tree as a Christmas symbol, but toys and gilded nuts. Only in more recent times were tinsel decorations introduced.

Today, the Christmas tree is an important part of Christmas for most of us, whether it be fir or spruce, pine, or just a plain paper tree. The Christmas tree industry has become a million dollar business in the United States and more than 35 million trees are raised annually for commercial purposes. Late summer and fall are the busiest times for the Christmas tree farmers. The trees must be selected, cut, and sorted. They are then trimmed, tagged, and transported to their various markets.
