BRIEFS. Rain! Whoop! Likewise moisture. J. l'luvius, here's looking at you. The Saata Rosa sails south today.

Prophet Potts was "thar or tharabouts." A year ago this morning was the moistest time in the history of Los Angeles. The Southern Paciflc office is now located at the northeast corner pf Main and Commercial streets. There are a good many rooms for rent in the district east of Alameda, street, between Aliso and East Second. Jerry Comocey is still trying to get upon the police force. He has enlisted Horace Belt to lend him "influence." The Supervisors yesterday accepted the new County Jail as a whole.

It is rumored that In view of the moist streets the hackmen have stood in and whooped up the price of conveyances for tonight to $7. Seven petty offenders were sentenced to confinement from 10 to 60 days by Mayor Workman, yesterday, and a number of others were fined. A sign at the door of a Spring-street free-lunch oasis announces "Vegetable Supe." All theatrical sompanies have the same the variety being beets.

Marriage licenses issned yesterday to F. W. Craven and E. A. Ranlett, Alfred Olliver and Josephine Rosher, and Rinaldo Nieto and Juliana Gonzalez.

The workmanlike fashion In which The Times yesterday presented the two huge passenger lists alphabetically arranged caused a huge demand for copies. The i police are much troubled by a diminutive shyster who is constantly trying to solicit prisoners. He Is the same fellow who labored long with Baynton, promising to free that worst of murderers if hired as his counsel. He came near overcoming Baynton's determination to plead guilty and hang as speedily as possible. PERSONAL) NEWS.

The horse broke loose and kept on. Mrs. Cheney and the boy plurkily kent still, and so did their horse, aud none of them got scratched. TWO DISASTROUS ACCIDENTS NAIIUOWLY ESCAPED. Pattl Has a Close Call on the Southern Pacific, and a California Southern Train Comes Within Ten Feet of CoIIiaion-Genqral Notes.

There was a narrow escape from a serious accident at Barstow, Tuesday. As the California Southern was rounding the curve, one of big twelve-wheelers of the Atlantic and Paciflc came flying out from a siding to the main track. fearful collision seemed Inevitable, but the engineer of the twelve-wheeler saved it He reversed his engine and put on the air-brakes so promptly that the sudden check of inertia was too much for the huge machine, and she flopped off the track and down flat on her side. Fireman and engineer escaped by jumping, and no one was hurt, though ten feet more would have doubtless caused loss of life. i- PATTIIN PKMIi.

It was only by a lucky escape that "the diva" will sing in Los Angeles tonight As has been noted in the telegraphic columns of The Times, the Southern Paciflc express was held several hours at EI Paso for the arrival of Patti and her party from their enormously successful engagement in the City of Mexico. Being thus much behind time, the engineer was seized with the somewhat unusual ambition to make up lost moments, and "let out" his engine ac-cordin'. Somewhere in New Mexico just where the party cannot tell he lost control of the machine. It was on a long, heavy down grade, and directly the train attained a fearful momentum. The frightened passengers clung to their seats or yanked the bell-rope wildly, and those who could see the engineer say he shook as with the ague.

The cars swayed violently as the train roared around curves, and hats and bundles were flying around inside. All the dishes on the dining-car were smashed into irremediable fragments. For something like 80 miles the train made HO miles an hour, and death stared every one in the face. At last, however, the mad race was stopped. The conductor admitted that they had had a mighty close call.

s. P. B. B. NOTES.

It is stated as now a dead-sure thing that the Southern Paciflc will immediately parallel the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line along the foothills, leaving the main track at Shorb's Station (now Kamona), passing the Raymond, traversing Pasadena, crossing the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley Railroad and running eastward north of it As has already been noted, the surveyors- are now camped near the San Gabriel winery. A dispatch from Santa Paula to The Times yesterday said: "The railroad (Southern Paciflc extension from Newhall) lias just reached Santa Paula." The Colton Semi-Tronic says: "The Southern Pacific Railroad Company will construct over 6000 feet of side-tracks here during the next few weeks. The company find it necessary to put in these long sidetracks in order to accommodate the fast-increasing trade at this point" The Southern Paciflc Company has a gang of men at work surveying back of Yorba. It appears to be their intention to run a line from San Bernardino to Los Angeles as close as possible to the foothills, thus placing the Atchison road between their two lines. CALIFORNIA SOUTHEltX BAILUOAD NOTES.

The new chair-cars to run between this city and Santiago are "daisies." Several new locomotives for the Arizona and Pacific- railroad and the California Southern are soon to be on the ground. They are of the very finest Twenty carloads of steel rails a day are arriving for the various branches of the Chicago, Santa Fe and California in this vicinity. Graders on the San Bernardino and Los Angeles Railroad have now completed 12 miles of road. Ontario will probably be leached in a few days. The Grant Bros, are contractors who push things, and the entire distance to Los Angeles will be graded in a short space of time under their supervision.

The Atchison Company has secured depot grounds at the corner of and First streets. fnSan Bernardino. Their line is surveyed as far as the Santa Ana River, making for LugoNia andRedlands. There is a big boom In real estate around tjie last-mentioned place. A gentleman secured a bond on a piece of land there on the 8th of this month for 16000, not paying anything down.

He cut it up into lots, priced to aggregate $30,000, and sold (3000 worth of lots on Tuesday. BAILUOAD BRIEFS. A. Touzalin, general manager of the Chicago, Burlington and Northern, is here in his private car. The railroad from Ballona Harbor to this city is sailing ahead.

Four miles of grading has been completed. The piles and dredges for the harbor have been delayed by rough weather, but are expected daily. AN UNLIKELY STOBY. The Santa Ana Standard says: "The latest rumors are to the effect that McPher-son, Modena and P. Uewes have offered the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Company $100,000 to run down through Mr.

Hewes's big ranch, leaving Santa Ana in the cold. We don't think that the company would be justified in this move, but it is hard guessing at what any corporation will do. As a rule railroads go where they are best paid, but the future business of the country Is worth considering. On Wednesday night Mr. C.

E. French, who is working hard for the new road, received a dispatch from San Bernardino, telling him to come up at once. He left Thursday morning and returned the same evening. He hiforms us that there is nothing new. The company simply say we are ready to go to work when Santa Ana furnishes the right of way, and we want to get to work soon.

Money talks, and it is all that will talk in railroading, so gentlemen of Santa Ana come to the ront, or we may yet have to listen to the music of the locomotive near the foothills." Dynamite Did It. Mr. Moll, whose views in regard to the procuring of rainfall by means of dynamite with or without prayer have already been published in The Times, is firmly of the belief that the present downfall is a direct result of the explosion of 40 tons of giant powder at the Cliff House. San Francisco. A iriena oi ins.

$1.00 FECIAL NOTICE TO THE AFFLICTED. DR. M. HILTON WILLIAMS Continues to treatall the various diseases of the Head, Throat and Chest, including the Eye, Ear and Heart, by his new and complete system of Medicated htitaV'tiimt, combined with proper constitutional remedies for the Stum-aeh, Liver and Blood, etc. Probably there has never been any system of practice so popular a one that has so completely revolutionized the system of medical practice as the Aerian or Inhalation System, for head, throat or lung affections.

The cures effected are simply marvelous, and can be substantiated by the very best citizens of Los Angeles. During the past three years we have endeavored to be conscientious with our patients, and if, upon examination, we find, in our judgment, the case to be of an incurable nature, we unhesitatingly inform the patient or friends. We believe this system to be justifiable and are ready to condemn any physician who would do otherwise. 'Below we give a sample of the cures effected by Los Angeles Sept. 24, 1888.

Dr. M.Hilton Williams DeakBih: I have been contemplating for some time iust making a statement of my case and the benefit 1 have derived from your treatment, remembering how glad I would have been could I have teen something of the kind from a person in the city to whom I could have referred, when I first came to Los Angeles from my home In New York State. I.had been Buff ering for seveial years with what various physicians In the Bast pronounced "chronic ulcerated laryngitis." I spent considerable time at the Clifton Sanitarium, and employed the best medical skill I could And, all without any permanent benefit, and, a last resort, our family physician recommended Los Angeles. For a time I improved, and then I began to go backward and all my former symptoms returned. Through a medical friend I was Induced to try your treatment, which I did August 20, 1884.

I become very much discouraged at times, but persevered, as I felt almost desperate and knew of nothing else to turn to. My throat trouble, being aggravated by a serious stomach difficulty, made It vary obstinate to deal with, but at last, after persevering for a time with the use of your remedies, I consider I am permanently cured. If this will be of any value to you, you are at perfect liberty to use it: also to refer any one to my mother, my husband or myself. Very truly yours, Mns. J.

D. Wiley, 821 Olive street, Los Angeles, Cal. Kivkusidk, Oct. 17, 1888. To the many testimonials won by Dr.

Williams It gives me pleasure to add my own to the list so highly in bis favor. For nearly two years I had been suffering from throat and lung trouble, brought on by catarrh. Had tried many remedies in the meantimeMnit found only temporary relief. After two months' treatment, prescribed by Dr. Williams, my cough left me altogether and I now have no pain In my throat or lungs as formerly.

I cannot speak too highly of the benefits I have rcceivedand shall ever be grateful to one who is worthy of the highest recoiuriiendation. Miss Minnie H. Harris, Blverslde, Cal. Kewhall Sept. 22, 1886.

Dr. Williams Dear 8ik: I write to tell you how much I thank you for what you have done me. My catarrh and deafness, which have been a burden to me for so long a time, are entirely cured, and my general health so much improved that I feel like a different person. Thanking you again for your many deeds of kindness, I am respectfully yours, Miss Annie Kicrards. Los Angeles (Cal Dec.

4, 1886. Dr. M. Hilton Williams-DKAR Sim I desire to let every man, woman aud child know that you were Instrumental in saving my life from that foul destroyer, consumption, came to Los Angeles from Quincy, on the 10th of June, 1886. The very next day I began treatment.

I was at that time afflicted with a large cavity In the upper lobe ef the right lung, fioiu which 1 had suffered over seven years, but, thank God, you cured me in 16 weeks' time, and now I am as well and strong as ever. Tell It to all. Yours truly, James Jessop, Qulncy, III. P. 8.

I go home tomorrow. Persons desiring treatment by this system of practice canj use the remedies at home as well as at our office, and which will cause no inconvenience or hindrance to business what ever. I have seen go many of these cases cured that I do not consider any case hopeless unless both lungs are seriously involved. Even then the inhalations aid us in dissolving the mucus and in contracting and healing the cavities, which nothing else can do with the same success. The very best references from thost already cured.
