SUNDAY, MARCH 5, 1989 MARYLAND 11B THE SUN OBITUARIES Dr. Mark Ravitch, surgeon and author, dies at 78 Evelyn Wenner, taught Shakespeare, journalism Professors and the Modern Language Association. She was also arf associate of the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington. Dr. Wenner's husband of almost; 40 years, C.

Malcolm Wenner, died in 1975. She is survived by a brother, Phir, lip Wingate of Wilmington. and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests that contributions be made to Western Maryland College or to the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 23 Court Westminster. Md.

21 mmtmm 1965, but left the next year to become professor of pediatric surgery at the University of Chicago. From 1969 until his death, he was professor of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and, until recently, surgeon-in-chief at Monte-fiore Hospital there. Among his works. Dr. Ravitch as official historian of the American Surgical Association wrote a two-volume chronology, "A Century of Surgery," documenting its evolution in America from 1880 to 1980 with extrapolations of future progress.

Dr. Ravitch was the recipient of innumerable awards from organizations in the United States and abroad, but he was especially proud of being honored by the establishment of the endowed professorships at Hopkins and at Pittsburgh, and of his election In 1983 as president of the American Surgical Association. Surviving, in addition to his wife of 57 years, are two daughters, Nancy Schwentker of Hummelstown, and Binnie Ravitch of New York; a son, Michael Mark Ravitch of Chicago; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. March 22 at the Heinz Memorial Chapel on the University of Pittsburgh campus.

Dr. Ravitch received his medical degree in 1934. He served as surgical house officer at Johns Hopkins Hospital for the next nine years earning more by selling his blood than from salary, he recalled and becoming the resident in surgery under the late Dr. Alfred Blalock, co-developer with the late Dr. Helen B.

Taussig of the "blue baby" heart operation. He took a leave to serve as an Army surgeon in Europe in the latter years of World War II. including more than six months at a tent hospital following the D-day invasion of France. While working at another hospital in Belgium, he was a few miles from the front during the Battle of the Bulge and at one point operated on its casualties for 72 straight hours. After military service, Dr.

Ravitch returned to Hopkins as associate professor of surgery until 1 952. After four years in New York as clinical professor of surgery at Columbia University and director of the surgery department at Mount Sinai Hospital, he returned here in 1956 as surgeon-in-chief of the old Baltimore City Hospitals. He was named professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins University in i Dr. Mark M. Ravitch.

He first saw them Soviet Union during a 1958 National Research Council mission out overblown rumors of developments in blood storage. Dr. Ravitch believed his competence in the Russian language was the main reason for his inclusion in the four-member delegation.

He was born in New York City, the son of Russian immigrants. His father was a revolutionary imprisoned first by the czarist regime and 'lajter by the Bolsheviks, and his mother was a dentist. After receiving an undergraduate A memorial service for Dr. Evelyn Wingate Wenner, professor emeritus of English at Western Maryland College, will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Little Baker Memorial Chapel at the college.

Dr. Wenner who was 88, died of heart failure Wednesday at the Carroll Lutheran Village, a retirement community in Westminster. She taught Shakespeare and journalism courses at Western Maryland College for more than three decades before retiring in the early 1970s. A specialist in Shakespearean English, Dr. Wenner was an authority on the life of George Steevens, who edited and published the Boydell edition of Shakespeare's plays.

Before joining the school's faculty. Dr. Wenner taught English at Mount Jewett High School in western Pennsylvania and at Annapolis High School. A native of Wingate, in Dorchester County, she received a bachelor's degree from what was then Blue Ridge College In New Windsor and a master's degree in English from the Johns Hopkins University in 1935. She received a doctorate in English from George Washington University In Washington several years later.

Dr. Wenner was a member of the American Association of University Deaths elsewhere Aurelio Buarque de Holanda Fer reira, the author of a dictionary thai bore his name and became the tog; selling book in the Portuguese lait guage, died Monday at his home near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
