'13--It a long, long time since a man named David Sslzni.ck boupht a story called "Gone With the Wind" and declared he'd ynake it into a movie.

Compared with some other enterprises, though, about which less was jaid. this picture is practically a quickie. A a 1 three years, four and 15 'days will have elapsed berween txxjk purchase and premiere: and actual production required -considerably less tha-i a year. For contrast, consider that Warner Brothers have been scheduling "The Miracle" since 1926, or that "Ben Hur" was in front of the cameras more than two years. And look any Chaplin picture, or any animated feature by Walt.Disney.

But of all the entries in Holly-wood'. 1 slow-motion marathon, nons has lagged and spurted, dozed and spouted, like the poor old morality play, "The Miratle." AH in all, more words have been heaped on the subject than were written about "Gone With the Wind," and all the actresses nominated for the role of the nun would outnumber two-to- one the members of the O'Hara club. Max Reinhardt. who had produced "The Miracle" in London in 1911. revived it on a grand rcale in New York in 1924.

Warners pegged it right away as material for an ep.ic in celluloid. It seemed particularly suitable because, as staged, everything was in pantomime. But there was a long delay while the studio cleared'its world title to the property, and by that time talkies were being bom and all pictures had to have dialog. So a script was written and carting began. Loretta Young was the first formally-announced choice as the nun.

but something happened to delay production, and soon afterward Miss Young left the lot. Sometimes, at the last minutes, it would be decided that a new script was re- qui'red. But "The Miracle" is still production schedule for this season, and if things keep lookh-r brighter-for Hollywood, the should, get started next year. It'll be in color, and on -a vart'scalo.

James Hilton has been dome pome work on the script lately, and a' lot of preparatory designing has been completed: The picture the longed filming time was "Hell's Angels." which required about three years because at the last it had to be altered from a silent to a talkie. "Ben Hur" took nearly as long, counting the wasted work of company sent over to Italy.
