A. (nee Uh- The Sun: Saturday, April 7, 2001: Page 5B Elaine Clare Geisz, 53, taught math, was middle school assistant principal Elaine Clare Geisz, a mathematics teacher and former assistant principal, died Tuesday of complications from a blood clot and heart attack at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. She was 53 and lived in Phoenix. Mrs. Geisz had taught algebra eighth-grade pupils at the Bryn Mawr School since September.

She began her career in Baltimore County schools in the early 1970s and was an assistant principal at Stemmers Run, Hereford and Old Court middle schools. She had taught earlier at Pikesville Middle School and at Dumbarton Middle School in Rodgers Forge, where she was the math department chairwoman. "She was a consummate professional," said Carolyn Helfman, associate head of Bryn Mawr. "She had great expertise and a sensitive heart. The combination made her a winning teacher and a supportive colleague." Remembered as an advocate for pupils, parents and teachers, she once detected that an eighthgrader at Stemmers Run Middle School was smoking and having trouble breaking the habit.

She gained his confidence by holding his cigarettes so he couldn't smoke during class hours and gave him candy to help stop tobacco cravings. At the end of the day, she returned the cigarettes and urged him to keep trying to break the habit. "She was firm but fair when she had to punish a kid, they accepted her punishment with dignity. She did things for us as teachers and we worshipped her. She made us develop our potential," said Maria Seibert, a Stemmers Run teacher.

"I've seen many parents hug her." "She was child-oriented. She worked with special education students and their parents helped with their coordination into the school. She was a patient person," said Kim Lovo, the secretarybookkeeper at Hereford Middle School in Monkton. "She was a kind and generous friend." Born in Baltimore, Elaine Clare Tomko was reared in Essex and graduated from Kenwood High School. She received an undergraduate degree from Towson University and a master's degree in special education from Western Woman, 88, is released from detention center By TIM CRAIG SUN STAFF By JACQUES KELLY SUN STAFF An 88-year-old woman who spent 43 days in the Baltimore County Detention Center has been released after pleading guilty to assaulting a police officer.

District Judge Michael L. McCampbell sentenced Leocadia Thomas of the 8800 block of Victory Ave. in Parkville to two years of unsupervised probation and ordered her to stop harassing neighbors and motorists who drive down her street. She was released Thursday. Thomas, who suffers from dementia, had been in jail since Feb.

22 after she failed to appear at a court hearing to face charges of assault and resisting arrest. The charges stemmed from an incident Nov. 16, when Thomas and her daughter, Karen Thomas, struggled with two Baltimore County officers who were trying to prevent the women from blocking traffic on their street. The county Department of Adult Protective Services is seeking to become Thomas' guardian because of her mental condition. A hearing on the request is scheduled for this month.

Thomas' attorney, David Henninger, said this week that he wanted his client to remain in jail until the guardianship hearing because he feared she would start trouble at home. Yesterday, he said he supports her release. "I was just a little concerned her health might become an issue," he said. Assistant State's Attorney Jason League, who dropped the resisting arrest charges, said he and Henninger agreed to the plea agreement Thursday. "People have been trying to find some place other than home for this lady," League said.

"But when that failed, the question was, do you keep an 88-year-old woman in The answer is no." cut College in 1949, she Liberty Mutual Insurance Baltimore.
