THE SUN TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20. 1987 4B TODAY 'Hello Mary goodbye sincerity, wit and talent WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP i Kasparov 2 pawns ahead as fourth game adjourns Play in the adjourned position will resume today. The fifth game is scheduled for tomorrow with Mr. Karpov playing white. Here are the moves in yesterday's game: cidal goings-on transpire, and he's the special target of Mary LouVicki as he's grown up from the lad who threw the stink bomb.

It's pretty hard to believe that a boy with that in his background could grow up to be principal of the same school, but the incredulity is the smallest of the film's problems. The largest is its waste of Ironside, a glowering, Satanic personage who was an icon of terror in such movies as "Scanners" and "Visiting Hours" (both terrific Canadian horror movies) and a prominent ugly face In Top Gun" (he was No. 2 at the fighter school). Here he's hobbled in the role of a prim school administrator and never allowed to really break out and show what he can do. a variety of unsurprising ways connoisseurs of the witty kill will find little to smile about here while the director, Bruce Plttman, goes through his number of trying to be a better man.

By giving Mary LouVickl inchoate memories of her time In purgatory, Plttman is able to do his imitation of the surrealistic imagery that was the hallmark of "Nightmare on Elm Street" II and III. By giving her a dour fundamentalist mother, he rips off De Palma's "Carrie." By setting one of the killings in a shower, he does his "Psycho" imitation. His one stroke of wit is to give Mary LouVickl a '50s hepcat personality, so that she rushes through the halls in saddles and petticoats calling people "Daddy-O." which is amusing for about two seconds, until you catch on that it is simply "Back to the Future" reversed, a pale trick already accomplished in a wan number that lasted in theaters about seven days, entitled "Teen Angel." It also allows the film to pump some '50s Muzak onto its sound track to no particular purpose save nostalgia. Ironside plays the principal of the high school in which all these homi "Hello, Mary Lou." bye-bye, happiness, I think I'm gonna die of boredom. "Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II." to give the film its full name, is a dim Canadian import that squanders the talents of the formidable Michael Ironside as it drearily loots the recent and not-so-recent history of the horror movie in search of a few box office bucks.

I can't recall a movie so utterly insincere and so utterly mechanical in the way it purloins from that which has come before it, and in the way It stitches its trophies together with twine and a knitting needle. It's more like a quilt than a movie. The set-up is pretty rudimentary: back in '57 a minx of a prom queen (Lisa Schrage) dumped on her best guy at the prom and went off with another. In retaliation, he climbed into the catwalk above the stage to dump a stink bomb on her. except that the burning fuse ignited her dress and she went up like a Roman candle In full view of the graduating class.

Is this the end of Mary Lou? And how! But for some reason her soul came to rest in a trunk in the school Associated Press SEVILLE, Spain World Chess Champion Garri Kasparov adjourned the fourth game of his title contest with challenger Anatoly Kar-pov yesterday two pawns ahead in an end game. 1 "I think Kasparov will win the position, but it's not 100 percent clear. Karpov has some chances to draw," said U.S. Grandmaster Maxim Dlu- gy-: Playing white, Mr. Kasparov sealed his 41st move in a game in which he had held the advantage since the opening.

I Mr. Karpov leads the 24-game series 2-1. If Mr. Kasparov wins the game, the score will be tied at 2 points each. The winner of the 24-game series needs 12 points.

A win scores one point and a draw a half. In the event of a 12-12 tie, Mr. Kasparov retains his title. (Don't ask why; there Is no why.) Then the years, as years inevitably do, passed; and an unhappy teen-ager of our modern age named Vicki (Wendy Lyon) stumbles downstairs, encounters the trunk, and her soul is invaded by the singed and ticked-off karma of Mary Lou. In her new body and with an attitude problem the size of the Chinese mainland, Mary Lou sets out to right a few wrongs. Yawwwwwnnnnnnll Oh, sorry, folks, rude of me to nod off like that. He said, 'Presumed Innocent' is one of the most talked-about books of the year. People all over the country claimed to have read it. But we don't know who has and who hasn't. The scorekeeping for book reading has been revised. The International Book Readers Association has decided that you no longer have to read a book from beginning to end to get credit for it.

Grant Fingerlift, who heads the scoring division of the BRA, told me book customers can now be given credit for reading as little as half a book. He said, "We discovered while more books were being sold, people were reading less. The book consumer was demanding points for books he didn't finish. So we had to bow to the pressure.
