6D SPORTS THE SUN WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20. 1 LACROSC2 iPure sport' turning pro with new outdoor league No. 3 St. Mary wins in OT over No. 2 Boys' Latin Robo Chomo scored a fastbreak goal with 2:45 remaining In over-Ume to lift host No.

3 St Mary's (7-J 4-1) over No. 2 Boys' Latin (6-2, 3-2), 12-1 1, In a Maryland Scholastic Association A Conference Division II lacrosse game yesterday. St. Mary's led, 9-7. after three quarters, but Boys' Latin outscored Roundup jl ir1, A By Bill Free Bruce Melerdlercks and Terry Wallace, two Melville, N.Y., businessmen and former Adelphl University lacrosse All-Amerlcans, are serious about turning outdoor lacrosse Into a professional sport.

betting 82 million the amount Invested for two years In six American Lacrosse League franchises, Including the Baltimore Tribe that lacrosse fans in particular and sports fans in general are ready to support the professional, outdoor version of the game. This Isti pure sport, not a mutation." Melerdlercks, founder of the league and owner with Wallace of all six teams, said at a press conference at the Merchants Club yesterday. "Our overhead Is very low. We're leasing small stadiums In suburban neighborhoods and emphasizing family entertainment on Sunday afternoons. We want to get tht youth Involved through two fan 'appreciation days, when the players meet the fans." reference by Melerdlercks to a "pure sport" appeared to be a knock at the pro Indoor version of lacrosse.

In an attempt to promote a family atmosphere and remove the American Lacrosse League from any comparisons to box or Indoor lacrosse, Melerdlercks and Wallace have banned the sale of alcohol at all games. They also have written mandatory drug-testing clauses into every player's contract. Besides Baltimore, teams In the league are the New Jersey Arrows, Long Island Sachems, Denver Rifles, Boston Militia and Syracuse Spirit. The Tribe will be coached by former Towson State standout Frank Mezzanotte. Tom Nelson, who played lacrosse and football at Towson State, is his assistant.

Bob Griebe, former Towson State Alt-American, will be the Tribe's general manager. Some of the top names on the Tribe are former Johns Hopkins at-tackman Brian Wood, former Blue Jays goalie Kevin Mahon and former North Carolina attackman Brent Voelkel. All of the teams open the season Sunday, with Baltimore meeting New Jersey at Montclalr State at 2 p.m. The home opener for the Tribe Is May 1 against Boston at University of Maryland Baltimore County Stadium at 2 p.m. The Tribe will play all of Its home games at UMBO Each of the teams will play a 1 5-game schedule, with either seven or eight home games.

The Tribe will play eight at home, with tickets priced at $8. Group tickets for 15 or more will cost $7 each, and season tickets are set at $56. Teams may carry as many as 23 players, with each player receiving a two-year contract worth 84,000 the first year and 86,000 the second. All teams will make the single-elimination playoffs, with the first- and second-place squads receiving byes In the first round. The third-place team will play the fourth-place team and No.

5 will meet No. 6 In the opening round. The regular-season champion then plays the winner of the Nos. 5-6 contest, and the second-place team faces the Nos. 3-4 winner In the semifinals.

Another base covered by Melerdlercks and Wallace Is a 10-game cable television contract with FNNScore, which Is available In 32 million homes. The games, which start at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., will be seen on a delayed basis at 7 p.m. on Sundays. Melerdlercks said the league will need to average 2,500 fans to make money.

"If we average a little less, we'll break even," he said. But regardless of how the league draws In the first two years, it will continue to operate because the money put up by Melerdlercks and Wallace has paid the bills for two years. Melerdlercks sold several restaurants In the San Francisco area and became Involved with Wallace In real estate, sports magazine publishing, insurance and communications businesses In Long Island.
