2E TODAY THE SUN THURSDAY, JULY 141988 EVENTS NAMES AND FACES Bastille Day, the bash was held at Chez Fernand. It Included not only the expected French food and champagne, but also the appearance of can-can girls. Robert Woods, the president of the Cleveland-based Telarc firm, called the BSO "the most focused and defined orchestra I've witnessed. They're superb in what they're doing and what they're planning." Part of what Telarc Is planning is to make "at least two and hopefully three records a year" with Zinman and the BSO. "In five years," Woods promised, "it's going to be quite a discography!" Stephen Wigler INXS tops MTV award nominees ished film "The Last Temptation of Christ," and most came away favorably impressed.

"Overall, I had a very, very positive reaction. I saw nothing blasphemous in It," said Episcopal Bishop Paul Moore of New York, who joined 30 to 40 other Protestant and Catholic officials Tuesday at the New York screening Like others interviewed, Bishop Moore accepted the reminder by Mr. Scorsese in his brief remarks at the screening that the movie is based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, not on the Gospels. Nevertheless, some said the film powerfully stated the human struggle of Jesus, which has a biblical basis and could stimulate fruitful discussion in churches. Evangelical groups have objected to the film's script, calling It blasphemous.

The film is scheduled for release In September. Glimpses Film and television star James Garner is in satisfactory condition following surgery on his stomach. The operation to repair an aneurism a swollen blood vessel was performed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center In Los Angeles last Friday, according to a hospital spokesman. The Smothers Brothers, whose brief revival during the spring was not renewed, will return to CBS for six episodes in the fall because of the writers strike, said Kim LeMasters, president of CBS Entertainment. Maryland nurses among those honored for AIDS care Nurses from around the country who care for AIDS patients will be honored today at the Department of Health and Human Services where they'll receive a special Assistant Secretary for Health award.

The 14 nurses include Christine Grady, Nancy L. Sears and Rose V. Thomas, all nurses at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Dorothy Ward-Wimmer of Children's Hospital National Medical Center in Washington and Bren-da L. Staton of D.C. General Hospital.

Robert Windom, assistant secretary for health, said, "I feel very strongly that nurses who are giving selfless, dedicated care to people who have AIDS have not received the recognition they have merited." Charles Stanley, a public affairs specialist for the Department of Health and Human Services, said the award recipients were recommended by their peers. Dr. John Bartlett, director of AIDS patient care for the Johns Hopkins Health System, said he believed the absence of any Hopkins representation was "clearly an oversight. We've asked our patients what they like best about the in-patient care here and they say it's the nurses that make the difference. "Our nurses do an extraordinary Job, an unbelievable ob.

That's a tough, tough Job." HHS communications official Jim Brown said nominations are already being received for a 1 989 award. He believes next year's search and review process will be more thorough and more In-depth. From Staff and Wire Reports BSO celebrates new record The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and its music director, David Zinman, threw a party for themselves yesterday afternoon to celebrate the release of their first record together. Since the record, a CD on the Telarc label that should be in record stores later this month, contains nothing but the music of French composer Hector Berlioz, and since yesterday was the day before Network rumors say CBS is up for sale to tycoon Murdoch LIZ SMITH "HALF THE people in America are faking it," said Robert Mitchum. The hot skinny from CBS will doubtless be covered everywhere today, so this is just comment. Rumors were ongoing (and denied by Larry Tisch) that a beleaguered CBS would be put up for sale to tycoon Rupert Murdoch. Evidently.

In this case, the denials of the man at the top bear weight. The network's other decision, acted on yesterday morning by the board, to replace longtime broadcast head man Gene Jankowski with young Turk Howard Stringer, is probably a good one. Stringer is the genial, ambitious, clever Welshman, now a U.S. citizen, who has been heading up CBS News. He emerges now triumphant, even overcoming those two recent books of antimatter about CBS Ed Joyce's "Prime Times, Bad Times" and Peter Boyer's "Who Killed CBS?" tidal wave.

People just can't figure out why Sheinberg did it. Why did he decide to stab his contemporaries just for the hell of speaking out? Why, that's not the Hollywood way! (The H. way is to always look like you're playing ball up front, keep your mouth shut out back, and tiptoe through the tulips hypocritically.) Some insiders and critics of Sheinberg now say he took a holier-than-thou attitude in his comments about other tycoons, making himself out to be more moral than they. This, they remind, doesn't sit well when Sheinberg himself paid his wife, actress Lorraine Gary, an astronomical $750,000 to play the female lead In "Jaws III." (Gary isn't exactly a household celebrity name, nor an actress who Is much in demand outside of hubby's productions. She was the original wife in the original Tribune Media Services ask, to Jankowski? I am told he will be moved upstairs on his way out.

Maybe CBS wasn't killed after all, merely wounded, and is on its way to recovery. ABC HAS another serious brain drain in the loss of its Incredibly talented director of visual communications Rick Giacalone. He is joining his West Coast counterpart, Hal Garb. WE MADE shock waves in Hollywood recently writing about a piece coming from Manhattan, written by Aaron Latham, In which the president of powerful MCA, Sid Sheinberg, spoke out candidly In criticism of some of his peers. (Specifically, he trashed Michael Eisner of Disney, Ned Tanen of Paramount, Frank Price, formerly of Columbia and Universal.) Now the movie community has actually read the article in full and I'd say the shock waves have turned to a Coming over from ABC to take Stringer's news job is David Burke, an ABC veep, right hand to Roone Arledge, and former helper to Sen.

Ted Kennedy. Burke is respected and considered to be "a man of Integrity." So what happens, you may THURSDAY NIGHT LIVE MUSIC Summer cool down. BEST Keep cool and comfortable at fantastic savings! tel. 550 Light 234-0550. Blues Jam Year 5, Full Moon Saloon, 1710 Aliceanna 276-9636.
