The engine has no valves, as has the normal engine, but Instead the gas Is forced into the cylinders from the carbureter by a positive displacement type supercharger (the only type permitted on racing cars under the new rules) through port openings In the cylinders. This positive type supercharger differs from the type formerly used on racing cars In that it does not build up great pressure in the manifold to force the gas Into the cylinders, but Instead merely delivers to the cylinders the amount of gas that will fill the space Unplaced by the piston.

The supercharger Is located on the front end of the engine. flew Engine Werks, 0 Recalling that the two banka of cylinders are in pairs, like a doable barreled shotgun. with the two synchronous ptetons connected to a common connecting rod bearing, with one rigid and one articulating rod, the pecohar ity of the engine in relation to that of the normal type Is that the gas comes in at the bottom of the left cylinder. uums completely, ana men crosses over to the right cylinder, by way of the dome shaped combustion chamber, and fills this second cylinder completely, due to the exhaust ports at the bottom of the rizht cylinder re maining open curing the intake of the rresn charge. Thus the burned gases are actually forced out this rlsht port by the new gas coming in.

This prooaoiy noes not make zor economy of fueL though no tests have been made on this. There is only one crankshaft of the eight cylinder type for the sixteen cylinders. All this sounds hlchlv technical, but it Is given for those who are Interested in the mechanical aide of the Duray engines. Duray says that the entire work on the eneines was done In hla shop In Los Angeles. uere' where the Duray courage comes In: These engines hare not been run.

What I have done Is to take a type of the two cycle motor and by redesigning the combustion chamber I feel that I have made practical a design that heretofore has never been' practical. decided to do something like this because I was anxious to bring to Indianapolis a different idea. Always hare been known at Indianapolis only as a heavy footed driver.

There was no question that.X could have brought a conventional eight or sixteen that would have been very fast, but I preferred to venture Into riths not so well known. And here am. Each of the blocks shown in the picture represents four cylinders of the engine. The four cylinders are separated into two. To the front of the motor is seen the positive type supercharger, the only type permitted on racing cars In the 500 mlle race. The lower photo shows XL C. (Cliff) Durant, millionaire sportsman and at one time had a five car team In the aeedway race.

He Joined with Duray on the new cars and Is expected drive one of them in the race. 7.000 to 10.000 revolutions a minute. If this latter figure Is attained. It will be the fastest a racing motor has ever turned In America. Duray probably will turn them not to exceed 6.500 or 7.000 in the race.

The engines are of 243 cubic inches displacement and should put out at least 200 to 250 horse power, If Leon's figures are right. Duray'a seating position la the cars will be even lower than that in the frcnt drives he ha driven previously, as the driver win be less than eight inches off the ground. One characteristic Durayean touch Is the placing of a big yellow dice atop the hand brake, with the deuce turned toward the rear of the car. Leon says there Is no significance In this, except that he merely wishes to add a touch of distinction to the cars. Duray's cars will be watched with a great deal of Interest, not only by the racing driver and the spectators at the speedway, but by automotive engineers generally.

The are of Butler's track and field activities, compared with the showings of other teams, is very interest lng. In 1918. Butler did not score. Wabash won with 48tt points. Franklin was second with 40, and Earlham was third with 23.

N. A. O. Ball State Teachers. DePauw and Indiana State Teachers, all scorers last Saturday, were likewise scoreless in 1918.

But Wabash and Franklin were not even represented last Saturday. In 1919. Wabash again won. with 45 points. Earlham was second with 32.

Franklin third with 26, and Butler (represented by Paul Draper) got 6. i I nf in i20 waoasir was completely out u. Earwam won with 63. and Franklin was second with 32H. But ler scored is.

In 1925 DePauw rose to the top.
