THE SUN, Monday, April 30, 1962 (3) DEATHS (3) DEATHS (3) DEATHS (3) DEATHS DEATHS (3) RESEARCH AID: TO 7 IN STATE Guggenheim Grants Total $1,410,000 To 270 New York, April 29 Maryland scholars and scientists have been awarded research fellowships by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The recipients, announced today, are Joseph Weber, professor of physics at the University of Maryland, and Dr. Ernest Ambler, of Bethesda, chief of the cytogenic physics section of the Bureau of Standards. Singleton, all professors at the Johns Hopkins University. Dr.

Einarsson will continue his studies of primitivism and Christian influence in Old Icelandic literature, Dr. Green his work on the development of poetic theory by the Fourteenth Century Italian humanists and Dr. Singleton his critical study of Dante's Divine Comedy. The fellowship awards this year totaled $1,410,000 and were granted to 270 scholars, scientists and artists. Plans Protested On Repair Shop A South Baltimore improvement association has protested the city's plans to build a central auto repair shop in the Cherry Hill area, and requested that no action be taken until its views are heard. In a letter to Dr.

Frank C. Marino, president of the Park Board, the LaRue Square Improvement Association, 130 Reedbird avenue, expressed its disappointment "that we cannot take the word of city officials." The letter, signed by Clarence Jones, president, said the Cherry Hill community was assured some years ago that area recently named to be the site of the garage, would be made into 8 park. "Baseball, Trees, Benches" The park was to include "a baseball diamond, trees, benches and park facilities in general," the letter said. An announcement was made about two weeks ago that consultants chose a tract on Reedbird avenue near Hanover street for a garage that would service most municipal vehicles. The final recommendation of Bonnett and Brandt, the consultants, was not expected until May 15, but informed sources disclosed that the Reedbird avenue site was their choice.

The land is already owned by the city and is near the city's No. 3 incinerator. It is also adjacent to the site selected for the Bureau of Sanitation's western division headquarters. Ballot Action Expected A $2,000.000 loan will probably go on the ballot this November to finance the garage and five substations scattered throughout the city. Mr.

Jones's letter said the members of the LaRue Square assocition are all homeowners in Cherry Hill who live close to the site of the proposed garage. He said his members had not only been promised a park, but also they were "assured that the incinerator would be demolished when the land had been filled." He asked the Park Board to make no decisions on transfers of land until his organization is heard. Levin Claims Union Support Marshall A. Levin, seeking the Democratic nomination for State comptroller, said yesterday that labor unions with nearly 30,000 members have indorsed him. The indorsements were announced at a $15-a-plate testimonial breakfast for Mr.

Levin at the Blue Crest North Restaurant. About 250 persons attended. Mr. Levin, a Baltimore lawyer, said the following unions pledge to support him: The International Ladies Garment Workers, with 10,000 members; Baltimore Regional Joint Board, Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, with 12,000 members; the International Association of Machinists, Memorial Lodge 1784, with 3,000 members; and the Amalgamated Association of Street, Electric Railway a and Motor Coach Employees of America, Division 1200, with members.
