8C TODAY THE SUN THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 1986 Super TV to go off the air March 31 'Amadeus' strikes the right notes Danny Thomas. Salditch also said the station will be active In trying to pick up sports events. He said, for example that Channel 54 would have been a serious bidder for the NCAA tournament game involving Maryland tomorrow night, which Channel 45 declined until a deluge of calls from local fans compelled the station to change Its mind. No news shows are planned for Channel 54, however, since FCC regulations no longer require a station to program news. "Starsky and Hutch;" 1 1 The Odd Couple." But Salditch hopes to do some less-than-usual things as well.

For example, the 8 p.m. movies on Saturdays will be "Black and White Classics" only four-star-rated movies made In black and white. And in the fall, Salditch has made a deal to run a package of five first-run sit-coms, including new episodes of old network shows such as "It's a Living" and "Mama's Family." an updated version of "Gidget." and new series starring Diana Canova and ce, choreographing the moves of the 14-member cast with Impressive fluidity, considering the cramped quarters. Still, so recently in the shadow of the movie of "Amadeus" and so many star performances on stage, there's good reason to doubt the folks at Spotllghters could pull it off. They do, though, and the best proof is In the seeing.

This one will surprise you. "Amadeus" will continue at the Spotlighters Theatre Thursdays through Sundays through March 30. THEATER REVIEW and actor Rick Hammontree com- mands the audience's attention throughout. He Is driven, tormented, but steady In his determination, and he never gives In to the easy sin of overacting. As Mozart, "that obscene child," David Caltrlder has the appropriate, irritating degree of immaturity, with a certain demonic edge.

As his wife, Linda Chambers does her best, but she lacks the requisite coy, childlike quality, Mr, Mays keeps the pace at viva CARTER, from 1C unheard of for a new station to In the black right away," he said) while building an audience base. By January 1984, he said, he 'was convinced that Super TV was headed out of business. "They went irom zero to 100,000 subscribers 'right away, but then they started to see that subscriber base coming 'down." Salditch would not comment on the number of subscribers Super ITV still has. In September 1984, Channel 54 kicked off a campaign to Improve local awareness of the station, anticl-pating the day when the station Jwould go full time. Salditch postponed the station to go afteP WBFF-TV-45, the longtime independent in Baltimore, which he perceived as a less-than aggressive station that could be counterprogram-med with some high-energy, creative techniques.

"I've always been a guy who believes In doing different stuff on television," he said. Some of the "different stuff" that Vlll be added to Channel 54 starting April 1 has a familiar ring to It. The weeknight lineup will look like this: 5 p.m. "Happy Days;" 5:30 "I Dream of Jeannie;" 6 "Soap;" 6:30 "Private Benjamin;" 7 Three's Company;" 7:30 "Carson's Comedy Classics;" 8 Movies; 10 By J. Wynn Rousuck It took a lot of nerve for mediocre Antonio Salleri to take on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and It took a lot of nerve for the Spotllghters Theatre to take on Peter Shaffer's grandiose, Oscar- and Tony-winning "Amadeus." However, the Spotllghters' production, tightly directed by Bradford Mays, Is far from mediocre.

It's considerably above the level of most community theater shows. Mr. Mays has used the reduction In size to enhance his interpretation. "Amadeus" Is about smallness, the smallness of Salleri's talent, that is, and the enormity of his envy of Mozart. Seen In the round, on the postage-stamp-sized stage at Spotllghters, that sense of smallness, the very trap In which Salleri was caught, Is inescapable.

Mr. Mays and musical director Christine Humphries also enhance the production by suffusing it with music, both Mozart's and Salleri's. The show has much more music than Is called for In the script, and it's a welcome addition, as it was in the movie an unavoidable aural reminder of Mozart's blessing and Salleri's curse. Of course, none of this would work without a commanding Salleri, NIGHT LIVE Annapolis, 1-268-0771. FarreH and Smith, The Horse You Came In On, 1626 Thames 327-81 11.
