THE SUN, Wednesday, November 26, 1975 Tenor's recital shows versa tility (TV ii 1 wcSL chard Strauss. After intermission, the ensemble of works was subtitled "A Spiritual Experience," the most provocative of which were "0 What a Beautiful Cit-y," "Aint-a That Good News," "On Ma Journey Now" and "L'il Boy." Mr. Shirely is obviously uniquely endowed for demonstration of the stylistic flexibility necessary for interpretation of such a compilation. He sings with intelligence and graceful clarity. He is able to dramatize a text, regardless of language, and do so with quiet dignity.

His is a style, therefore, of so phistication and authority, based on musical understanding and controlled dramatic power. Technically, his is a voice with the burnished weight of a baritone and the golden intensity of a tenor, his upper range is rich and robust and, at the same time, he can float By ELLIOTT W. GALKIN George Shirley, American tenor who appeared in recital at Morgan State University last night, is a rarity in today's world of vocal soloists. Still only in his 30's, he is already a lieder singer in the grand style and a musician able to move from one idiom to another, doing so with consummate ease and conviction. The organization of his program and the manner in which the evening's offerings were grouped and designated implied his interpretive ver-sa tility.

There were four songs in French- "Songs of Travel and the Sea," which included Faure's "Les Berceaux," Debussy's "De Greve," Duparc's 'L'Invitation au Voyage" and Berlioz's "Lisle Inconnue." This was followed by "Moods of Love," five German songs of Brahms, Wolf, Schubert, Schumann and Ri a pianissimo in which there is warmth, elegance and tonal flexibility. One of the most remarkable renditions was that of "Hoer Ich das Liebschen Klin-gen," from Schumann's "Di-chter Liebe" impeccable for its lightness of timbre, its delicate palette of tone color and its poetic clarity. The sense of personal and introspective was enhanced by the nuanced accompaniment of Wayne Sanders at the piano. The partnership was comparably subtle in Roland Hayes's arrangement of "L'il Boy" which has become a classic of its kind, a work whose performance by Mr. Hayes at Morgan about a decade ago remains memorable.

Mr. Shirely presented it with straightforwardness and intensity. The words were crystal clear, the mood conveyed devotional yet mysterious. It was, as a result, a rendi- i tm mam 'svtv? 11J I I (if Uf I Historic buildings featured tion of extraoridnary dramatic impact and it received ardent acclaim from the near-capacity audience, the size of which was a reflection of the increasing dynamic interest in music that the university is helping to stimulate. If last night was any indication, such identification will surely continue to develop.

My answer By BILLY GRAHAM Question We have always sought to live a Christian life and to treat all persons fairly. Recently, however, someone in our community has come to hate us and has said he is going to make life miserable for us. He has even remarked that he is going to use witchcraft and spells to gain power over us. The problems are almost more than we can bear. What should we do? Answer-Tbe Bible tells us that there art forces of evil beyond our understanding.

However, the Bible also tells us that Jesus Christ has conquered the powers of evil and "hath delivered us from the power of darkness." For this reason, Paul can say that "God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (II Timothy The believer In Christ knows that Christ is stronger than Satan and the power of the Holy Spirit can deliver us from evil. God's promise is sure, that "neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans Claim, therefore, the promises of God that He is with you. sco Neck Bicentennial Committee and the Baltimore County Bicentennial Committee.
