What I love most are historical novels. All that decadent, rich, immoral stuff about the French court I can't get enough of it For the summer I thought I'd read 'Mayor' by Ed Koch." Mayor Schaefer. "It's the 350th anniversary of the state and that's inspired me to read up on Maryland. There's one book I've heard about that I want to read called Tales and Traditions of Old St Mary's by Marie Briscoe Croker. If it's a particularly slow summer, IH read 'Bandages of Soft Illusions' by P.

J. Wingate. It's a history of Dorchester county." John Barth, novelist "Right now I'm reading some books by former students of mine. When I've finished with those, I'm going to retreat for the summer into the Nineteenth Century and spend time with my old heroes, Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. I've never read The Old Curiosity Shop' or 'Northanger Miss Manners (Judith Martin), etiquette columnist, "This summer I'm going to read some of Disraeli's novels.

I'm right in the middle of The Letters of Henry James, Vol That's where he discovers sex, but is too old to do anything about it" Mr. actor "My favorite book is the Bible." John Waters, movie director "It doesn't matter whether it's summer or winter, my reading habits never change. I buy every true crime book that ever comes out I just finished a book I liked a lot called 'And I Don't Want to Live this by Deborah Spungen. Sid Vicious killed her daughter. I'm really looking forward to the biography of Diane Arbus." Capt Nicholas Brown, director of the National Aquarium: "Gee, I'm not a very good reader.

I've been so loaded down with trivia, I haven't read a decent book in a year." READ, from Cl biographies and autobiographies. I don't know what her summer reading will be. But she's just finished a book called 'Natural Victims' by Isabel Eber-stadt Before she went to China, she reread 'Spring Moon' by Betty Bao Lord and 'Marco Polo' by Bill Buckley. She loved 'Murder in the White House' by Margaret Rosalynn Carter, former First Lady: "I want to read that book by Umberto Eco, The Name of the I liked Shirley MacLaine's book 'Out on a Limb. I gave it to Amy and now she believes in reincarnation." F.

Stone, journalist, author, classics scholar "I'm still working my way through Pindar's 'Ne-mean You know, he was the most divine sports writer who ever lived. On one level he says nothing, but on another he's absolutely brilliant I'm very interested in poetry and old-fashioned enough to like Tennyson. This summer I'll probably concentrate on him and William Blake. They're both wonderful." "Professor" Irwin Corey, the World's Foremost Authority: "The book I'm reading this summer is "The Price of Power' by Seymour Hersh. It's about what's his name Henry Kissinger.

I've read a little of it already. It proves there are lessons to be learned from history, but we never learn them." Richard M. Nixon, former president: Says an aide, "President Nixon's time for reading is very limited. He's writing a book called 'No More and that's keeping him pretty busy." Gloria Steinem, editor of Ms. magazine: "I want to read 'Sisterhood is a collection of essays from 90 countries.

It sounds great." Helen Gurley Brown, editor-in-chief, Cosmopolitan magazine: "Oh, I read all the time for to the movie, no relationship to reality, it's simply generic. Then there's that tacky ad, with the knife blade, the two girls behind the shower curtain (no girls appear behind shower-curtains although Rachel Ward does wear a plastic poncho), and the low-rent copy has found you Screaming won't help never builds energy, even The movie itself any real tension or within the limited confines of the In "The Final Terror," "Friday the 13th" meets "Deliverance" and "Up the Creek." Alas, the movie's not as good as any of them, and when a movie is not as good as "Friday the 13th," much less "Up the Creek," then we are talking major league problems. It is notable only in that it stands as a minor indiscretion in the early careers of two actresses currently hot, Daryl Hannah (the mermaid in and Rachel Ward (of "Thorn Birds," "Sharky's Machine" and most recently "Against All Somehow I doubt it will end up on their resumes. A third remotely familiar face in the crowd belongs to Adrian Zmed, who had a brief fling at stardom (he flunked the course) in "Grease II" and now sidekicks for William Shatner in "T.J. Hooker" on the tube.

And moviegoers with long memories may even recognize Joe Pantoliano who was "Guido the Killer Pimp" in last summer's "Risky Business." Another scoop on the name front involves a Baltimorean. Look carefully at the credits and you'll see that the "Executive in Charge of Post-Production" was Allen Holtz-man, the 1964 Forest Park graduate (class president, no less) who became a film editor and ultimately directed a feature for Roger Corman called "Planet of Horror." The only other interesting thing that can be said about "The Final Terror" is that its production values are unusually high for a film of its genre. The movie was executive produced a few years back by Samuel Z. Arkoff, a well-known Hollywood impresario of schlock: He was one of the geniuses behind American-International Pictures in the halcyon '60s. Arkoff may not have much taste, but he knows how to get a lot of movie on the screen for very little money.

The film has a studio sheen to it, with extremely picturesque cinematography and some arresting images and compositions. It's even in focus, a breakthrough in the slasher field. But beyond that "The Final Terror" is hopelessly nondescript. Begin with the ridiculous title. It has utterly no meaning, no relationship 1 Indiana Jones Temple of Doom (PG) 4:50.

A group of guys and gals set out on a rafting trip through California redwood country and are set upon by a madman who turns out to be just who we thought he she, actually, not to give too much away was.

Eventually the group reverts to jungle cunning themselves and sets up a counter-ambush. Although the kids particularly Ward, who looks great in anything up to and including plastic ponchos are handsome enough, they never develop any personalities. And, quite naturally, they insist on acting with unbearable stupidity in order to provide the mechanical plot with bogus thrills. Perhaps the worst flaw is that the group's leader is killed too early, and nobody takes charge except a strange Southern guy (John Frie-drich) who thinks he's Robert De Niro in "The Deer Hunter." "The Final Terror" is neither final nor does it pack much terror into its 90 minutes; it is, however, finally terrible. Rating: Violence, brief nudity sports calendars; sex, you get sex calendars." Between the parties (the biggest was the Crown affair for children's writer Maurice "Where the Wild Things Are" Sendak at the Congressional Club) and receptions (the most reserved, the Rosa-lynn Carter cocktail hour at the National Textile Museum), life in the nation's capital is imitating stream-of-consciousness fiction, as opposed to the stream-of-consciousness reality people are used to.

But it all comes to a conclusion tonight with a huge banquet and ball just the kind you read about in books after which 10,000 weary characters will close the cover and say: The End. Mime Marceau calls painting his '2d life' CONVENTION, from Cl set) to duplicate what one passer-by described as "the interior of the average reader's mind." Next door, Workman Press has smaller palm trees, but compensates by giving out orchard leis to remind buyers of its upcoming classic, "A Day in the Life of Hawaii." The Better Homes and Garden people built a kitchen. And Hammond, famous for road atlases, had male and female body-builders on hand to flex for onlookers and tell them about "What's What in Sports," a book, according to C. Dean Hammond I'm that "will give every reader verbal access to the physical world." For access to the spiritual realm, Kartes Video communications is offering "The New Media Bible," a cassette version of the good book no home with a VCR should be without. "This is going to snowball," said salesman Dave Groff.

"It's like watching the Ten Commandments. The churches are grabbing them up right and left." Some critics of the ABA complain there's too much emphasis at its conventions on low-quality, high-revenue books and accessories, and not enough on good literature. But as one publisher put it "Money talks. Period. Books that sell give us the funds we need to publish books that don't." So deals are cooking all over.

And whenever business is conducted, there's book talk. On the subject of Timothy Leary's autobiography, "Flashbacks," publisher Jeremy Tarcher confessed: "The book was considerably more linear than the manuscript." Comedian Don Novello (a.k.a. Father Guido Sarducci) is said to be thinking about becoming a farmer after writing a book about sheep. Animals are hot. Calendars, everyone agrees, are too.

"People are reflecting their lifestyles in calendars," said Edward Malinowski, president of the USA Book Expo. "If you're into sports, you get TUESDAY NIGHT 0J MUSIC way, 327-0426. THEATER CINCINNATI, Ohio (AP) Marcel Marceau, the renowned mime, calls painting his "second life." Mr. Marceau, 61, visited an art gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sunday to exhibit 15 of bis original lithographs. He also signed autographs and discussed his painting.

"The reason I came to Cincinnati was to bring, through this exhibition, an acquaintance to the public that Marcel Marceau is not only the foremost mime an acquaintance to the public that Marcel Marceau is not only the foremost mime in the world, but also a painter," he said. "I show in the theater the essence of those visions, but through the invisible. But here, I show the visible. "And also I have the gift of painting, and painting is my second life." He started painting at age 7. As a teen-ager, he considered mime his hobby and painting his career.
