Electrical Appliances, Stoves, Refrigerators, Washers, Etc. How To Find More Space In Your Kitchen Careful kitchen planning is evident in this "exploded" view. There's spaco in a great many cramped kitchens for the modern conveniences desired by most housewives. A little deft planning and rcarrariginf? can work a miracle in efficiency. In the average small kitchen there appears just enougrh area for the traditional cobination: stove, sink, refrigerator, and breakfast table. Thus, laundry chores are relegated to the basement and stair climbing becomes the order of wash day. Tight Quarters—The "before" kitchen (above) was typical. Measuring only 12 x 8 feet, it seemed barely large enough for kitchen essentials with no possible space for such modern devices as a clothes washer, dishwasher and electric Ironer. By rearranging existing equipment and adding a few new units, the tiny kitchen was transformed into an efficient workshop (above). It also brought the laundry out of the cellar. The positions of the refrigerator and cooking range were transposed, the latter going: next to the sink for improved convenience. Flanking the other side of the sink (in place of the small work table) went a combination clothes and dishwasher unit with interchangeable tubs for each service. This machine speeds both dishwashing and laundry tasks. Utility Cabinet — Next to the refrigerator was installed a "preparation center," a well- designed cabinet offering a wealth of upper-shelf space, plus ample storage area under the counter. Part of this lower storage area was devoted to an electric gladiron, an ironer requiring a minimum of space when folded. Introduction of the washer unit plus the ironer into the kitchen not only saves household :nilc- age; it permits, the housewife to combine culinary and laundry jobs. In short, she can wash clothes and bake a pie tiimul- taneously without fear of the crust being burned while she's busy in the basement. Space Saver — Another space saver is the breakfast bench and portable table. Snug against the wall, the bench occupies a minimum of usable space, can be augmented by dining chairs when there's full family quota on hand for breakfast. It's as comfbr'.'a- blc for work tasks as for dining. The table, pushed back against the bench when not in use, can be swung around for a myriad of purposes. It serves as a handy resting place for the clothes basket, as a good surface'for sort- Ing- or stacking clothes when ironing, or for general food prop- aration. Now is the time to think about making over some of the rooms in your house. Take a walk through your house and see for yourself where improvements could be made. Remodeling work can always be used to brighten up a room, make it appear to be larger,-and sometimes make another room for you.
