TODAY 5B MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1984 till Si-fci -ra School prize settled Anderson on being composer 'Savage Streets': Mean violence and little else STEPHEN KUNfE I. II. Il.l I I.I. .1 I. ul jl.

ill vim i "lit i i X'Xv -e 1 pianos, she said she thinks the string version is more effective. "The problem with writing for the piano is that I still haven't gone beyond the sound of a piano," she added. "I'm still thinking of the repertoire I've learned or heard and not gone and made my own sound. "I love the sound of strings and this piece fell into that lush, evoca- live, sensual sound." Ms. Anderson thinks her most re-cent composition, a 10-minute choral and orchestral piece based on Edgar Allan Poe's "Israfel," also falls into that category.

She hopes her church choir director will give the piece its -premiere performance in Lancaster, Pa. Although she claims to have a I "playful" side, Ms. Anderson said -she no longer has time for the musi- cal jam sessions that were once an important part of her social life -growing up in Lancaster. "In high school I remember get- ting up on stage and inventing songs on the piano," Ms. Anderson said.

"I kind of outgrew that a while ago be- cause I'm no longer in that kind of environment. "I still play the piano for my friends and improvise on occasion," she added. "But I spend most of my time composing and then showing my friends the end product." THE SUNBAR8AHA HALXOOCK Elizabeth Anderson began studies piano at the Peabody Prep. When ''Grease" leaks into "A Clockwork Orange," the result is the gummed-up exploitation pic, "Savage Streets," now at a few area houses. The movie, low on brains and style and high on mean-spirited violence and undistinguished rock 'n' roll, is a thoroughly routine job in all respects except one: It is remarkable for the intensity of the venom that is its mode of social exchange.

In fact, nobody talks in the film; they chant a kind of grim-jawed litany of contempt A typical bit of dialogue: "You I ought to you!" "Yeah? You and what army, man?" As for plot, the movie is mercifully direct: A thoroughly vicious gang of punks rape and beat the innocent, deaf younger sister of a tough teen-aged girl (Linda Blair, several moons beyond her teenaged years) who goes out, buys a crossbow, and turns each one of them into St Sebastian on the cross. Although a few more atrocities are factored in, that's basically it. Blair seems to fit into her high school society in roughly the same position as Stockard Charming in she's the leader of the pack, the pack consisting of tough-talking girls who wear red satin jackets, hang around a rock club and spit at their teachers. But there is no John Travolta in this Southern California high school; the "good" boys are all bland wimps and the bad ones seem to be on three-day pass from SS Panzerdivision Totenkopf. The chief miscreant is Robert Dryer, with a razor blade dangling from one ear and a bad case of Jack Palance worship clouding his brain.

Dryer is of the in-your-face school of acting. His face is his soul and each line reading is accompanied by muscular exertions running from crown Fleisher at the conservatory. "It's musically accessible and very original." "Mahler used his Ruckert's poems," Ms. Anderson said of the 12-minute work. "So I guess my inspiration came from listening to Mahler.

"But it also has a personal meaning for me because I was involved in a relationship at the time I wrote it." Although Ms. Anderson has also arranged the composition for two By Jack Dawson Elizabeth Anderson was still playing French horn in an elementary school band when the idea of composing songs struck her like a lost chord. "I found it frustrating because a lot of the instrumental repertoire for young children is so repetitive," Ms. Anderson recalled. "Later on I was exposed to some symphonies and tone poems I liked, but the elementary and junior high school music tended to be rather limited and dulL The die was cast when her piano composition earned first prize in a junior high school talent contest "That's when I decided it would be more rewarding to create music instead of re-creating it" the 24-year-old composer reflected.

She continued to play French horn and piano in various musical groups through college, and still spends up to five hours a day at the piano. About three hours is spent at concentrated practice while the remainder goes to composing. "That's when I'm in a more dreamy state drifting around the keyboard," she said of her song-writing. "I juxtapose ideas, listen to motives musical themes and for things that sound good. "I've had a lot of theoretical training, but I still use the piano to compose because I'm not Mozart" Ms.

Anderson studies composition with Pamela Quist, a former Pea-body Conservatory faculty member, and piano with Enrique Graf, a Uruguayan pianist and Peabody Preparatory teacher. She will begin work on a master's degree in composition next year. Her fourth major orchestral composition, "Drei Stucke fur Sopran und Streichquintett" (Three Songs for Soprano and String Quintet), based on the poems of Friedrich Ruckert, was previewed in October at a benefit concert sponsored by Artists to End Hunger in St. Dominic's Church. A Peabody recital is also in the offing for the spring.

The composition was originally written for four string parts two violins, viola and cello but Ms. Anderson added a double bass line because the cello part was so complex. 'It is written in four movements, two of which are accompanied by Ruckert's lyrics. Soprano Donna Pierce, violinists Jose Cueto and Irene Sazer, violist Jennifer Rende, cellist Lauren Patriquin and string bassist Timothy Goplerud per- to chin that ought to get at least a 3 on the Richter scale. Yet he does not out-bad-act Linda Blair.

Blair, so vulnerable in "The Exorcist" a decade ago, has turned into a coarse, harsh-looking young woman, as befits the Queen of the Zs, her peculiar niche in the industry. Physically, her features haven't spread as her head has enlarged; they are concentrated in the center of her face, so that she manages to look peculiarly childish and cravenly used at the same time. She's not remotely believable as a teenaged girl, and her acting style given to such old pro affectations as the archly raised eyebrow and the theatrically exaggerated body posture is more suited to vamp roles or gun molls or porn queens. She's the perfect Girl-Next-Cell. The film might be easier to dismiss as harmless, megaviolent fluff if the rape scene in the boy's bathroom of the high school weren't so completely horrible.

As brutal as a heavyweight fight and as cruel as a session in a KGB torture chamber, it has the power of involvement to it. It makes the viewer a rapist, too. You come out of the theater and want to turn yourself in to the police. Rating: Extreme violence formed at the benefit The piece took about three months to compose and nearly as long to produce. The total cost was only about $150, including $100 for copying scores and parts, because both the church and artists donated their services.

"That's a lot of money for me," Ms. Anderson said. "It's helped me to be more business-minded." Performers and audience alike were enthusiastic about the premiere reading. In fact, the musicians enjoyed playing it so much they promised to "push it" among their friends in the music world. That pledge pleases Ms.

Anderson because that is how most classical chamber pieces are circulated for subsequent sale and performance. Christine Clark, one of her prof essional musician friends, thinks the piece will be performed elsewhere if it is marketed properly. "It's particularly effective because it is so evocative of the moods of the poetry," said Ms. Clark, who plays at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and is a piano student of Leon LOSE 20,25, 30 POUNDS OR MORE AND PAY FOR HALF YOG CAN BE 20, 25, 30 OR MORE POUNDS SLIMMER BY THE NEW YEAR "May be as good as 'Superman ttelM SMIy.
