There was no sound for about 40 seconds, which seemed like forever, since the whole world was watching." The 40-second snafu turned out to be a happy omen. Since the technical bugs surfaced early, they were squashed quickly. Now, after five months on the air, WGPR has gained the support of major Detroit advertisers, slowly easing toward its first-year goal of capturing 5 per cent of the city's $65 million TV ad market. WGPR, whose call letters stand for "Good People Radio," is owned by the International Free and Accepted Modern Masons, who operate an FM-radio outlet and the TV station in new facilities on Detroit's East Side.

To stake their claim as the nation's black TV pioneers, the Black Masons raised $4 million to build a communication center and to satisfy Federal Communication Commission requirements. They raised the money by selling Florida real estate and a couple of hotels. Dr. William Banks, the 72-year-old founder and supreme grand master of the 350,000 The politically savvy fraternal leader said he believes the need for blacks "to create true images of their own to counteract false stereotypes" was so urgent he pulled every available political string, from the White House to the Detroit City Council. Banks, a lawyer and minister, said, "For 25 years blacks could only watch TV. We weren't included. Now we have an alternative. "Black writers and engineers are working together to tell our story, since only blacks can tell it best," Three-fourths of the 48 Good People staff members are black. But it is the local programming though sparse -that sets WGPR-TV in a league by itself.
