The first big pay-per-view event on Super TV will be the Marvin Ha-gler-Thomas Hearns middleweight championship fight on May 24. Price: $15 if ordered before May 14, $20 thereafter. Again it will only be available to Washington viewers. But Super TV promises more big events in the future, and not only boxing matches. Concerts could certainly be part of the package.

A Rolling Stones concert was a major pay-per-view attraction last year, for example. Still, the major attraction of the sub-sciption service on Channel 54 will be those movies and ballgames. Nancy Craig, the director of marketing for Super TV, said yesterday that Super TV had polled its subscribers in Washington (it has 33,000 at the moment) about what they most wanted to see. "We had a terrific response," she said, saying about 40 percent returned the questionnaire. The results are still being counted.

But it's unlikely the basic package will change much. It is based on movies, three or four per night and more on weekends. The movies are hardly first run; neither is the list overflowing with box-office smashes. Like the cable TV movie services, Super TV's movie list tends to have a few fairly recent successful films, a few modestly successful ones and a mixed bag In this case it doesn't. What Baltimo-reans are going to be offered, starting July 1, is a service that will be available through a normal channel on their TV dials.

The channel will be 54, a new station on theUHF dial. The actual subscription service will be provided by Super TV, a company operating out of McLean, which has been providing a subscription TV service for Channel 50 in Washington since November. Here's how it works: A subscriber pays a monthly fee (after an Initial installation charge and deposit) and Super TV comes out and attaches a new antenna to the roof of his or her house. They also put a decoding device on his or her TV set. The decoding device is necessary because the Channel 54 signal will be "scrambled" (blurred and covered with lines) during the hours the station is exclusively a pay-TV outlet.

Until 7 p.m. weekdays and 3 p.m. on weekends, the station's signal will be a normal, unscrambled one. Channel 54 intends to concentrate on offering financial news during its non-pay-TV hours. It has gained exclusive rights to the Financial News network and will use much of that service's material and fill the rest of the time with re-runs of old TV shows.
