in THE SUN, Sunday, January 20, 1980 In search of primitive art in Haiti TRAVEL TRAVEL TRAVEL 20 164.20 HPIUJf.il, I ONE WEEK HAWAII FROM Locomotive race lo be re-enacted in Britain The Rainhill Trials of 1830, in which early steam locomotives competed for a cash prize, will be re-enacted in Britain. On May 24 to 26, reproductions of three of the locomotives-the Rocket (which won the 1830 race), the Sans Pareil and the Novelty will mark the 150th anniversary of the race by competing at the original site, just south of Liverpool. There will also be a cavalcade of more, than 30 steam locomotives, diesel and. electric trains, illustrating the history of railways. The oldest locomotive to be shown was built in 1838.

Stands will be built to accommodate 50,000 spectators. Special trains will run from major British cities to Liverpool or 'Manchester, from which special local services will take visitors to Rainhill. More than 30 discontinued railways have been preserved in Britain, ranging from antique narrow-gauge mountain lines to full-size operations. Package tours -will be available combining visits to one or more of these railways with a trip to Rainhill Trials. A company called British Heritage Tours will offer a variety of group tours called "A Feast of Steam." Tours are planned for three, six and nine nights to visit the Rainhill Trials as well as railways in Wales and northern England.

Rates (air fare not included) will range from about $165 for three nights to about $600 for nine nights. For details, write Peter Beighton, British Heritage Tours, Vicars Lane, Chester, CHI 1QX, England. By IAN GLASS Port-au-Prince, Haiti In Roxy's art gallery in Kenscoff, a village high above the capital where voodoo drums beat through the night, I saw an especially intriguing painting. It was a blue harbor scene with sail-vms. but what made It Ingenious was if you peered closely, you could see ha the bottom half was merely a of tire top half.

"How much?" I asked Roxy nonchalantly, a silly ploy, since Haitian gallery owners have long known how to perceive the visitor's interest in their wares. He quoted a price considerably lower than I had expected. "I'll tell you what," I said. "I'm going to look around. But I'll be back." Roxy smiled.

He knew I'd be back. And so, after strolling through the crowds of colorful vendors selling everything from vegetables to chickens to silk to bamboo paintings, getting into an argument with a Mme. Sauver because I had taken her picture and she said she didn't look good (in fact, she was beautiful), I returned. "OK, what do you say?" We struck a congenial bargain and I walked off with the painting under my arm. Back home in Miami, I gave it as a present to a friend.

She was delighted, spent a small fortune framing it, and it now hangs in her penthouse in one of the most expensive condominiums In the city. It is the admiration of her socially conscious friends. What my friend did not know is that the painting cost me exactly $40. have It framed when I got home, but it is a delicious piece of work. My wife bought, for $5, a small but delightful study in flowers.

Only later, when she took the wrappings off, did she discover the oil was still wet The woman had, obviously dashed it off; that is how prolific they are. Paintings abound in the downtown area near the docks, and in the Iron Market, where live an unbelievable melange of merchants Vho sell, not only paintings, but mahogany goods and basketware, and who may have the greatest skills in pleading, cajoling, entreating, of any vendors in the world. Incidentally, the art in buying any of these paintings -outside of the galleries, that is-is to offer half the price asked, then go from there. One of the silliest experiences in this field was buying a huge piece depicting Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. It was really quite horrendous, but I bought it for two reasons: the price and the fact I could see it would live forever when the artist tore it from the frame and dunked it up and down in the pool by which I was sitting to prove the oil would not run.

It hung in my apartment like a specter for some time until a friend, who fancies himself to be a perspicacious art critic, fell in love with it and insisted on buying it. He offered an outrageous price, and, knowing its true value, I refused. However, he persisted to the point that I finally gave in. Christian Science Monitor Newt Service The moral of this story is that one cannot place a value on Haitian paintings, which proliferate like the Haitians them-selves. Only the experts here can tell who are the masters-the Duffants, the Obins, the Boozes, the Abelards, the Blanchards, the Armands-from their plagiarizers.

My friend Aubelin Jolicoeur, who owns Claire's Gallery, swears by St. Brlce and AugustoGo to the Red Carpet in Petition-ville, just outside Port-au-Prince, and you will find Bigaud and Beauvoir shown prominently. Nader's, the Jerusalem, Is-sa's-a trek up the hill from the crazy gingerbread hotel, the Olaffson-will tout other artists (many of whom work in their basements), For the work of these artists, however, it should be pointed out, we are not talking about $40. We are talking about $400 and double and even triple that amount. They are painters whose works have been revered for years and are snapped up by discerning collectors from all over who know their value will be continually enhanced.

But for the less discriminating there is a simpler, more economical answer. For everyone in Haiti-not only the masters -paints, it seems. Their canvases sprout like the ever-present bougainville. On one road in Kenscoff, I found them lined up in the hundreds: bright oils in every shade, of every subject (fighting cocks seem to be popular this yearlf Each vendor, of course, vies for your services. I bought, for $75, a huge canvas whose subject, for me, summed up the essence of Haiti: hundreds of women in clothes of many colors carrying baskets on their heads at market.

It cost me another $75 to TWO WEEK ALL HAWAII from $500.20. SAN FRANCISCOHAWAII from $276.20. SAN FRANCISCOHAWAIILAS VEGAS from $380.20.
